Hyderabad Series: Hasrat Mohani District Central Library

Hyderabad, a city that never received much recognition. A city, that holds the gateway to the beautiful Sindhi culture. A city, which has a rich history, and is filled with a life of its own. Sadly, not much coverage is given to the seventh largest city of Pakistan. So, I have decided to explore Hyderabad's rich history, on my own. I'll be starting this series with the Hasrat Mohani District Central Library.

On my way to the center of the city, almost everyday, I see this particular place. An old building. A few years back though, I had no idea about its history, but then I thought of finding out, and dig things up. So, I decided to visit the beautiful place once again.

The building was initially called Holmstead Hall. It was built in 1905, in the memory of Dr. Holmstead, who was a surgeon in Hyderabad, from 1868 to 1884. He is famous for his services during the cholera epidemic, when it spread in the region.

Sometime later, it was converted into a free reading hall by Mr. Wassiamal and Mr. Hiranand.

After the independence of Pakistan in 1947, the building was made Radio Pakistan's broadcasting station. In 1967 though, the station was moved to a new building. Holmstead Hall was now given the name of Hasrat Mohani Library. Unfortunately, the building was ignored and started getting damaged. Its condition worsened and no one in the authority paid any attention to the whole issue. In the process, the building and its surroundings were illegally occupied.

In the year 2008, Mr. Kanwar Naved Jamil, Zila Nazim (District Mayor) paid special attention to the building and soon it was repaired and renovated, and was officially given the name of Hasrat Mohani District Central Library.

On my recent visit, I had a conversation with the local staff including the incharge of the evening shift, Mr. Zaman Qureshi. He said that there are more than 4000 registered members, and on average 200 people visit it everyday. He further added that there are more than 30,000 books currently, and more books are being added. He also added that members often request new books, and the requests are forwarded to the governing body, which handle the whole procedure.

What I noticed was, that the condition of the building is not that good, from the outside.

One of the reasons which I believe could have been the use of inappropriate material for the renovation. Another reason is the halting of funds. Mr. Qureshi mentioned during our conversation that the library receives 25 Lakh Rupees annually from the Hyderabad District government. Unfortunately, since the change of district government last year, the funds have stopped. He further added that the library management had been sending applications, but they have been ignored. This situation, though not that much bad at this moment, is slowly getting worse. If things remain the same, it might start damaging the library itself. I seriously hope that the government pays attention and the issue is resolved as soon as possible.

Once the Dubai test was conquered by Pakistan, focus was set on the next one, in Abu Dhabi. England were expected to make at least one change in the playing XI. Monty Panesar came in, and quite amazingly, had a brilliant comeback, as he got 7 wickets in the test match. Oh, and England went on to get humiliated.

Pakistan pulled an astonishing win, and swept England away in the second test. Pakistan scored 257 in the first innings, which was bettered by England in the form of 327 runs. With the trail of 70 runs, Pakistan came on to bat. Things were pretty even stevens, until Pakistan lost 4 wickets, on 54 runs. England were (supposedly) in the driving seat, and were moving along. Pakistan's two young guns, Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq were on the crease, and knew well they had a long battle to fight, if they were to survive in the test match. Notably, and quite amazingly, this was the first time they were batting together. English bowlers were all geared up, and were ready to take them down, and finish Pakistan's chances. Azhar and Asad, started cautiously, and slowly got into the rhythm. With their stubborn and determined efforts, they steadied Pakistan's ship, and scored 88 runs together, and placed Pakistan in a relatively safer position. Their gritty approach affected England psychology. Azhar and Asad scored 68 and 43 runs respectively, before getting out. England soon dismissed rest of the batsmen, though everyone of them contributed, led by Saeed Ajmal (17 runs). Umar Gul also dispatched Broad for a big 6.

So, it was all set. The equation was crystal clear. England needed 145 runs to defeat Pakistan and level the series 1-1. Pakistan knew well, that to give England a competition, they needed early wickets, and put some pressure on the English batsmen. It didn't come that early, as first wicket fell in the 15th over when 'The Professor with the Golden Arm' got rid of Cook off his own bowling. Strauss survived a bat-pad-caught appeal, thanks to Billy Bowden. The decision in my opinion was one of the most outrageous ones, and from the looks of it, will definitely be immortalized in the infamous hall of shame. A few minutes later though, it was time for Saeed Ajmal to devour his new-found bunny, Ian Bell, though, in the strangest of manners. Bell saw himself getting bowled, as ball rolled towards the stumps, hit them, and bails (of Bell) were dislodged.

Game was officially alive! But the real damage was about to happen. In the 21st over of the innings, the unsung spinner, Rehman, struck twice to remove Pietersen (Keyword: Left Arm) and Morgan (Who has failed to find the famous book '101 ways to play spin' in the local bookstores, like every other English player. He's also wondering what is he doing in the test team?). England were 4 down for 37 runs. Trott wasn't still out in the middle, and this time, it wasn't Trott's fault. Soon it was time to sit down, and have a cup of tea. It was bound to be an excising last session, and perhaps the deciding one as well.

As the game resumed, Strauss and Prior stayed for a while, until Rehman struck again and trapped Strauss lbw. Even DRS failed to save Strauss, and he had to go off the field. It was Trott's turn to face the pressure, and he was finally out in the middle. But even he couldn't stop the carnage. Rehman trapped him lbw, and he had to depart as well.

England were down to tailenders. Broad, failed to survive, and got dismissed in the same over, when the ball spun sharply and disturbed the timber!

England were down, and virtually out of the contest. Next two wickets were gleefully accepted by Saeed Ajmal who got rid of Swann and Prior. Only 1 wicket was left, and in the next over, Rehman nailed Anderson. England were bundled out for 72 runs. Celebrations started, as Pakistan had pulled an amazing win, one that will be remembered forever. Pakistan coming out of nowhere, and nailing England hard.

The so-called World Number 1 Test team were humiliated by a team that had risen from ashes, like a phoenix. Hungry for victory, determined to perform and destined for glory! Sadly, somone is homeless now. As that someone said "England will come back refreshed in the morning and there is no doubt in my mind that England will win. I'll put my house on it." A sad moment for all of us. Hope he finds shelter somewhere!

This win will be cherished forever, and stand among the legendary Manchester 2001 and Multan 2005. Abu Dhabi 2012 will forever remain in the hearts of those who love team Pakistan, and have always stood by it, no matter what!

Limit's beyond the Stars: Meeting the participants of Shell Eco Marathon (Asia)

Recently, I had the chance of discussing Shell Eco Marathon Asia with the enthusiastic team of students who are taking part in it. Here is what we talked about.

1. First and foremost, tell all of us about Shell Eco Marathon and what is it all about?

Shell Eco-marathon an event, a competition, a life time experience call it whatever you like.

Primarily Shell Eco Marathon is a competition which is being held every year by Shell in different parts of the world mainly Europe, the Americas and Asia. The concept of this competition is to design, build and run fuel efficient vehicles. The vehicle travelling the maximum distance against a liter of fuel stands out as the winner. The theme behind organizing such an event is to find a potential solution of rapidly growing energy crisis faced by automobile sector by the hands of young engineers through their novel and innovative ideas. Teams from all over the world comprising of engineering students come together, put their heads down and try to come out with something that could bring any succor to the fuel saving cause.

2. What about your project? Tell us in detail about it?

Pakistan being an Asian country allows us to participate in Shell Eco Marathon Asia. Sepang International Circuit track, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia will be our final destination InshaAllah. The event is divided in two categories. One is called Prototype and the other is Urban Concept. Both categories are quite distinct. Prototype as from the name emphasizes on the development of a concept car that is built keeping in view the futuristic needs of fuel efficiency. In simple words, one has to propose an idea of enhancing fuel efficiency that could be employed afterwards through its prototype. The prototype has to be a three or four wheeled drive.

Urban concept focuses on the manufacturing of a modern day road-worthy vehicle with augmented efficiency. It is a conventional four wheeled drive which should be capable of hitting the roads straight after its production. In short it has to be designed to meet the needs of today’s drivers in a more realistic urban environment.

Keeping in view the above mentioned categories we are focusing on putting the best of our skills and knowledge to get the best results. We are trying to make our cars as much stream-lined and aerodynamic as possible so that we can achieve our targeted efficiency by reducing air drag. Primarily we are trying our level best to attain a mileage of 200 km against a liter of fuel. We will be looking forward to minimize our vehicle’s weight to the best possible level to further enhance its efficiency. Fiber glass body and honeycomb reinforced chassis will serve the purpose over here. Rest; there are certain technicalities, which won’t be wise enough to disclose them here, remember we are in competition.

3. Tell us about your team, and the reason you thought of taking part?

Enormity of the task demands a sincere team effort without which the whole objective will be put into dire peril. To put proper focus and concentration on both the above mentioned categories two teams have been formulated. The teams consist of six members each who belong to the departments of ‘mechanical’ and ‘industrial & manufacturing engineering’. And above all these teams belong to Pakistan Navy Engineering College which is a constituent college of National University of Science and Technology Pakistan. The two teams have been named as BOLT and BALLISTA. Team Bolt has been handed over the responsibilities of Urban category and Team Ballista is carrying forward the proceeding for Prototype category. The more channelized your work is, the better are the results. Everyone is working in one’s own domain for the same cause and that’s the beauty of team work.

Now one would ask that why are we participating in Shell Eco Marathon, what’s the purpose, what’s the reason behind it, we say there can be a million reasons for that. This Shell Eco Marathon is a huge platform for the engineering students to hone their skills. It provides them an opportunity to see the practical side of their theoretical knowledge. They get to know things, get to see things happen practically. Moreover, they come to learn how to work as a team, how to manage their work being a team and by the end of the day it gives far more than it takes.

4. Do you believe that such events will give way to other people? And inspire them?

The answer to this question is an absolute yes. One would ask, how? See, the current scenario of Shell Eco Marathon wouldn’t have been there, had our team, along with another one from Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute wouldn’t have participated in SEM Europe back in 2009. Those two teams were the only teams from Pakistan to ever participate in the history of this event. This maiden appearance from Pakistan made way for the participation of other Pakistani teams. People felt more passionate about this thing and more and more teams came to the scene up till now in the advent of this first appearance. The current participating teams owe a great deal to those pioneering teams.

5. What are you currently hoping for when talking about the project?

If you are talking about the completion of this project then we say we will be able to complete this project without a doubt. And if you are asking about our chances of winning then honestly it is hard to tell at this point of time but Team PNEC is working really hard.

6. Any request on your team's behalf?

Request, yeah absolutely. See it costs a lot to participate in such an event. We need finance for the manufacturing of cars. The more money you put in, the better results you get. Secondly it costs a lot to take these cars to Malaysia along with the travelling and accommodation expenses of the team members. In total, it is a really costly venture. We need potential sponsors who could provide financial assistance to support our campaign for mutual benefit. We request companies, businessmen to come forward and support this noble cause. An important message, and King Kong's children

Believe it or not, Pakistan is a place where you will find stuff that blows your head off. Things which can only happen in Pakistan!

A couple of days back, I was eating out, with friends. I noticed this important message on the wall.

A message that can save many lives, to be honest.

"Yahan par nasha karney se parhez kijiye, bill counter par khud ada karein. Shukirya" which translates to "Avoid getting stoned here, pay the bill on the counter yourself. Thanks"

Do I need to explain further? This message is like something out of a self-help book, with a touch of roadside restaurant wisdom.

On the same day, while going home I noticed that a new movie is coming out in the local cinema. Here's the poster

King Kong has kids too? How cute. Wait, where's the wife?

The poster read "King Kong ke khoonkhwar bachay" which translates to "King Kong's bloodthirsty children" Hmmm. Interesting, no? Who would not want to watch this film? Family fun, get to know about the lives of bloodthirsty children of King Kong, awww along the way too.

A few minutes later, I noticed another poster...of the same film.

What the hell! That's the poster of Rise of the Planet of the Apes! That's a bummer, I tell you! Now I will never know about the outings of the cute little violent children of King Kong! And there's certainly no King Kong in Don 2 (the poster above the King King, I mean, Rise of the Planet of the Apes poster in the picture). But who knows Shahrukh Khan rescues King Kong in Don 3?

I guess that's life. But, wait, hang on a minute, what if all the apes in the film are in fact the great grandchildren of King Kong? Hmmm

Kachee Goliyan - Comic Book launch event (Hyderabad)

Kachee Goliyan is not the name of a herbal medicine. It is the name of a sensation, an imagination, and not an accusation.

Kachee Goliyan is basically the first-ever 'proper' comic of Pakistan. The dynamic duo behind the comic is of Ramish Safa and Nofal Khan. The lead characters of the comic, JC and Sufi are based on their personalities. JC being Ramish's alter ego, and Sufi is Nofal's. In their case first impression is just a lame attempt to destroy someone's awesomeness. You can never judge them in your first attempt, later on you'd be too busy laughing.

What started as an attempt to get rid of boredom during their 'journeys' to their university, became a phenomenon. It all started with carpooling, making fun of people, which ended up in the creation of the comic, Kachee Goliyan. The comic was launched on the occasion of New Year, and as a gift to all their fans.

Team Kachee Goliyan decided to have a launch event of their comic book in Hyderabad, the 6th largest city of Pakistan. Arrangements were made and on 8th January 2012, the historic event took place. I, along with my friends, were the first ones at the venue (McDonald's).

After a bit of waiting the team KG ( Kachee Goliyan) finally showed up. A few minutes later the whole place was filled with folks wanting to know about Kachee Goliyan. Before the event kicked off, both Ramish and Nofal had casual chats with the folks around, shared jokes and all. Once the hall was filled, they started telling about themselves, the whole concept of the comics as well as a lot of other things. They also shared different stories, which were quite hilarious.

They also revealed that they plan to release a new comic book every month. They also declared that they make fun of everything in their comics, apart from religion, bollywood and politics. Once they were done with that, free comics were offered, and the offer was gleefully 'grabbed', of course. Ramish then had a sketching session, in which he drew the characters of 'Sufi' and 'JC' for the folks. Some people even made him draw 'their' comic book versions, which left him exhausted...and hungry. Like Bruce Banner's transformation into Hulk, he left the scene and got his meal.

It was a very fun-filled event. I, myself, met a lot of people, new and old both. Old classmates too. Team KG was quite happy to see the response, and assured that they'll come back again to this wonderful city.

LetterGate, Man-suwar E-Jazz and Tissues

Before I start discussing the issue, that is supposed to be discussed in this post, I will share the secret document I got my hands on. Well, a little background story first. About 8 months back, a letter was sent from a high ranked official to the guys who are responsible for the media control in Pakistan. There was no mention of the letter anywhere, and it reportedly had top secret information. The information it contained was of confidential nature (DUH!?) and was kept under the lid. Even the famous conspiracy theorists like ZH, Baybak Kabootar etc. failed to sense its existence.

Somewhere in a country, famous for its burgers, and freedom, a man named Man-suwar E-Jazz, while sitting in his room, and chatting to his friend on Facebook, received a BBM notification. He jumped from his sofa and reportedly grabbed the Blackberry and checked the message. It was from a very respected official. It had some information about a 'letter' that could change the future of a country, called Pakistan. E-Jazz knew that his American accent, and his love for Andy Garcia cannot be carried on, because his 'motherland' faces a new conspiracy, just out of the oven (licensed by Establishment, of course).

Within the next couple of days he received a lot of other information, which made him even more restless. There came a time when he didn't even care about slicking back his hairs. Few days later, he received a package. He went into his bathroom and opened the package. There was a piece of paper in it, he carefully observed it. It was a letter, and as soon as he started reading it, he forgot about Andy Garcia, his American accent, his business and even the renewal of his Playboy subscription. This was a conspiracy to change Pakistan forever, shatter the democracy and God-knows what more. "That's it! This should be exposed!" He shouted in his awesome American accent.

Soon the contents of the letter were revealed in the form of an article in a famous newspaper "Fashington Post". The whole world was suddenly concerned about the letter, the brilliant Pakistani news channels turned red and showed the 'breaking news'. The official whose involvement was quite prominent in the whole LetterGate issue was "Mr. Jal-Khani". He, allegedly wrote the letter, under the instructions of a 'third-party'. Mr Jal-Khani was immediately summoned by the Pakistani government. What followed were the uncountable hours of LetterGate coverage on news channels, talk shows filled with the discussions and so on. It even motivated a famous Pakistani personality, Veena Malik, to bare it all for the sake of motherland, in some way she believed she was helping the nation (She has gone missing though, thickening the plot big time).

As you just read, the letter is filled with a lot of controversial statements. But nowhere in the letter the name of the 'novel' is revealed. But, some political analysts, and wannabe actors already had some idea about the novel, but none of them talked about it. The name of the novel was then finally revealed by Mr. Jal-Khani himself, during a meeting with the high ranked officials. The name shocked everyone, and that was not it, its adaptation was the most popular drama of the year! Here it is...

What's with the black color, eh?

Its fans were present all over Pakistan, and not just that, the excessive use of social networks to discuss Humsafar was astonishing. Only time will tell what will be the result of this LetterGate, but Humsafar has certainly done the trick for tissue-making companies.

Please Note: This whole story is based on fiction, and any resemblance found is of course, intentional. Please do not sue me, or issue fatwa against me. I hope you enjoy it, and Humsafar fans, please don't start a revolution against me. Thank you very much very much.

It is often said that sometimes a song can define your life. You can relate to an entire song, and laugh along, cry, or simply smile. Song has the power of taking you back to your cheerful as well as gloomy memories.

The song that I will be discussing in this post is "My Way" by the legendary Frank Sinatra.
Good ol' Uncle Frankie is someone whom I love dearly. His songs are filled with emotions, the loss of a loved one, meeting the love of your life out of nowhere, admiring someone you like, and a lot more things.

This song, My Way, is all about life. It's about a person who is looking back at his life, while standing on the edge of his life. That person is everyone. There comes a time in our lives when we look back, look at our follies, our adventures, our losses, and our achievements.

And now, the end is near;
And so I face the final curtain.
My friend, I'll say it clear,
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain.

The person, does not regret his life, at all. And that's the way it should be. Living our lives to the fullest. We go through different paths in our lives, and sometimes when life looks dark, and without any hope, we have to make our own ways out of it.

We all are humans, we all make mistakes. That's what 'we' do all our lives. Some mistakes are silly, and harmless, while some can affect our lives, and we regret them. But why regret? Yes, we did things that changed our lives, but shouldn't we act positive, in a way? Our positiveness should always be mightier than our regrets, our mistakes, our follies. We attempt doing what we think is right, we decide it on the basis of the situation, of our values and so on. We take our chances, and we face the consequences. And we learn. We learn through our mistakes, we try our best not to do the same mistake again, and even if it happens again, we should never give up. Because, that's 'our' way.

Regrets, I've had a few;
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.I planned each charted course;
Each careful step along the byway,
But more, much more than this, I did it my way.

Our lives are filled with attempts that go in vain. We try to do things out of desperation that are regrettable. We try to absorb things, which we fail to hold on to. We pick up things, and then fail to carry the burden, succumbing along with its weight. We find it hard to stand up, but then we should never give up. We try to find support, and the best support we find is within ourselves. We leave what cannot be undone, stand up, make our own way and move on.

But through it all, when there was doubt,

I faced it all and I stood tall;And did it my way.

We all feel love in our lives, we cry, we share our sorrows with our beloveds, we listen to theirs, we are afraid of people, our hearts our broken, we move on, we find support in our friends, we find kindness from complete strangers, at times our tears keep on flowing. We lose, we win, we give up, we keep on trying. But then, at the end of the day, we all look back at everything that has happened and we 'amuse'. We're through the worst part, no? We can only think of everything, and learn. Yes. Learn. And our closing remarks? We should stand firm, and say

"No, oh no not me, I did it my way".

I've loved, I've laughed and cried.
I've had my fill; my share of losing.
And now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.

To think I did all that;

We are all, what we are. Why refuse to accept that? We were molded this way. We should never be shy of speaking what we are feel in our hearts, and what we believe. We shouldn't echo the thoughts of those who never wanted to live, who were afraid of facing their fears, who never had hope. Yes, we should give them faith, provide them a glimmer of hope in the darkest of times. Lead them to life, again. Lastly, no one can deny what we did. We lived a life, that we do not regret, we followed our beliefs, we spread happiness, absorbed the sadness, laughed, cried, felt down, felt elated. And it's all written somewhere, I am sure. We all did what we had to, in our own way. We will look at ourselves, facing our final moments and say "And did it my way!"

Whenever I go to Karachi, I never forget seeing the lovely River Indus. Though, whenever I see it, I notice some change, let it be the amount of water in it, or something that I can only feel, not see. On my last trip to Karachi, and when I was coming back, I had this thought. The water in the River Indus, is more or less the same. The riverbed is same as well (though, the river has changed its direction as well its area through the course of history).

What I was wondering was, the same River Indus, the same river bed, has witnessed a lot things. From bloody wars, in which the blood kept mixing in the water, to women washing the clothes. It has seen the change of man. Revolutions, progress of society, civilizations, destruction and everything that you can imagine that is related to us, the humans. Yet, it has remained silent, and calm. Observed everything, absorbed everything. It cannot speak, and yet it will make you feel what it has seen, what is has gone through.

This is life my friends, as simple as that.

As I looked at the river,

You wake up one night, suddenly. You look around; to your surprise (and panic) you cannot move your head! You can look at the ceiling, a bit sideways as well, but you cannot move your head! Okay, now you try to move your arms, to your shock they aren’t moving as well and same happens with your legs. You even try to shout, raise your voice, but in vain. You are not able to comprehend the situation. That my dear readers, is the natural condition which is called “Sleep Paralysis”. In this condition your mind wakes up, but your remaining body doesn’t.

Background

Sleep Paralysis was once considered of supernatural nature and such concepts still persist. It was widely associated with actions of paranormal beings, ghostly creatures, monsters etc. It was also considered that such condition is an indication that something unlucky can happen in the near future. In England it was supposed that an evil ghost, particularly an old, witch woman presses the person in his/her sleep and tries to suffocate the victim. In Chinese culture it was supposed that it is caused by evil demons. Such concept is common in most of the cultures with a little variation. In Afghanistan it is believed that this happens when someone has committed something bad. But such concepts are nothing but result of overly active imagination, away from reality.

Symptoms

Inability of moving body parts upon awakening.
Little phases marking the stress of muscles a bit.
Small or long duration of lucid dreams.
Occurrence of hallucinations.

Possible Causes

After years of research and observations many causes of Sleep Paralysis have been deduced, some of them are described below

1. Sleeping in an awkward position: There are chances that you might experience Sleep Paralysis while sleeping in a strange or unusual position.

2. Thinking deeply before sleeping: There are some chances that you might face it when you sleep while you were trying to sleep. It mostly occurs when you’re thinking about a terrible situation, a confusing problem etc.

3. Change of lifestyle: A sudden change of lifestyle also sometimes trigger it. If you travel to some other place, obviously your routine changes a bit; you’re disturbed as well which can cause Sleep Paralysis. Jetlag can also trigger it.

4. Mental Fatigue: You can suffer it if you’re tired mentally. After a long day of mental work, it can occur.

Is Sleep Paralysis Dangerous?

As mentioned earlier, Sleep Paralysis is a natural phenomenon and occurs sometimes. It is sometimes associated with narcolepsy, the neurological condition of uncontrollable episodes of deep sleep. But such occurs very less, and is at most times temporary. Sometimes it is hereditary, in other words, it runs in families. But such is not that common.

There is also a feeling of anxiety in Sleep Paralysis, which of course is obvious but should be avoided. Sometimes there are illusions attached with Sleep Paralysis as well, like you feel during the condition that you’re being watched, or someone is in your room. But there is nothing to be worried about, nothing at all. Such occurrences are rare and if happen are illusions. There is no physical damage associated with it, so don’t worry.

Sleep Paralysis and Dreams:

You might think that dreams have got nothing to do with Sleep Paralysis. You’re wrong. It plays a major part in this condition.

While in Sleep paralysis you can have very clear or lucid dreams. Dreams can occur after the condition, before the condition or can even go along with the condition. Such dreams feel like reality. The main reason behind the occurrence of such dreams is the overactive condition of brain, which pushes the imagination to heights.

Precautions for Sleep Paralysis:

Do not panic as it will increase the effect, that’s all! Remain calm
Do not force your body; just let it be the way it is. Your continuous force will result in nothing but humiliation.
Think of pleasant things or do not think at all.

Prevention is better than cure:

Do not think of confusing, mind-teasing or terrible things before sleeping.
Drink few glasses of water before sleeping.
Maintain food routine; don’t take heavy food before sleeping.
Sleep in a normal position, avoid awkward position.
Try not to watch a horror or confusing movie before sleeping, sometimes it affects your brain and you end up being in Sleep Paralysis.

Remember, Sleep Paralysis is a normal phenomenon and doesn’t cause any physical damage. But as mentioned, if you take care of some things, it will not occur at all.

The Gig Called Death

Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon is one of the best albums ever, and that is a universal truth, at least to all those who have listened to it and know what real music is all about. The whole album is filled with amazing tracks. Music is superb, arrangements are interesting, vocals are haunting and lyrics are fantastic. Tracks deal with issues such as wars, society, insanity, corruption, money, humanity and life itself. One of the issues that one song highlights is not an issue, it's a fact. It talks about death, rather, screams about death. The track is titled The Great Gig In The Sky. The song starts with soft piano music and then we hear the following words (which are being spoken by Irish doorman of the Abbey Road Studios)

"And I am not frightened of dying. Any time will do, I don't mind. Why should I be frightened of dying? There's no reason for it — you've got to go sometime"

Once this declaration ends, Clare Torry steps in with her strong and emotional voice and starts screaming, and a scream that you will remember forever.

The start of the song, that is based on soft piano music describes the moments before someone dies. The time when everything moves slowly, time itself freezes to an extent. But then, as soon as your loved one dies, his soul leaves the body, there's an uncontrollable rush of emotions, that is completely pure and is not based on anything artificial. Your loved one's death is a loss that is simply irreplaceable. But then you already knew that death is inevitable, the grim reaper is always creeping up behind you. That also means that one should live his life to the fullest and once someone dies, accept the reality, and cherish the times you spent with them. Remember all the beautiful memories and all the wonderful moments that both of you shared.

The Offensive Red Bull Ad.

During the recently concluded Pakistan Vs. Zimbabwe Cricket tour, a Red Bull ad was aired frequently on Ten Sports. Most of us are already aware of the concepts behind the Red Bull's ads. Amazingly this energy drink has the power to give wiings (metaphor of course). So, keeping that in mind the ads are created, which are often funny and most of the times weird. So, this particular ad that aired during the matches was no different. Though, a bit in the context of a cricket match. In this particular ad it is shown that a match is being played and the batsman (Pakistani of course) stops playing as he notices a streaker (yes, you read it right) enters the playing area. The batsman then asks for a 'drink' and a person brings *wait for it* Red Bull for him. The batsman gulps it down, and then hits the cricket ball. The ball, just like a guided missile hits the streaker's bum. Accelerated like his arse caught fire he zoomed past everyone and landed in the crowd, landing on a lady's lap. Awkwardly, his unmentionables are instantly covered. It could have been a a card or anything, but no. It was a Pakistani flag. For some people it might be just harmless humour. Really? It's not a real life situation. Secondly, ever fathomed the probability of that happening in real life? Enough maths talk. Here's the ad. (Excuse the quality. I shot it myself)

So, did you notice how they actually pulled it off? Disgusting, isn't it? Sadly, the ad went unnoticed by the masses. In fact, I kept on tweeting about it. Thankfully a friend, Ammar, guided me and shared the contact details of both Ten Sports and Red Bull Pakistan. I wrote an email to both, and got response from Red Bull Pakistan.

Dear Mr Zeeshan,

Thank you for your feedback.

Your complaint has been noted and due action will be taken.

Hopefully the ad will not be aired again.

Update: I recently saw the ad on some major channels, I noticed that the part where the flag is lying on the crotch, has been edited. The flag has been removed, instead, there's a towel.

Insanity.

Aren't we all insane, eh? Some people would definitely stand up and say "Are YOU insane? How can all of us be insane?"

Let's just pick our daily lives here. We go through our lives, doing stuff, visiting places, meeting people, making decisions, and what not. If I ask a random person, "Are you insane?" a person would react differently. Some would say "Heck no! Are you high or something?", some would simply ignore, while some will give a sarcastic or humourous remark. We all act differently to things, based on our perceptions, our beliefs and our attitudes. Now, I ask you, are we all insane? See? Some of you smiled, some of you gave a weird expression, while some of you might have simply ignored. We're all insane, because we are not normal.

For some, the person believing in paranormal might be insane, for some a person madly in love, might be insane too. For some even I am insane, because I chose this topic for discussion, for some people this whole world's insane, excluding them.

Remember when Isaac Newton discovered gravity sitting under a tree? Though, this story has been mixed with myth through the course of time, but its central idea remains the same. Insanity. Imagine you're back in time, looking at Mr. Newton sitting under a tree. An apple falls in front of him, and you see Newton making weird expressions, going into deep thinking. Most of us would have said "Ah, the man has gone bonkers! He thinks he just found Loch Ness Monster in that apple! What a crack!" Yeah, right, the man just made one of the most amazing discoveries ever, he's insane all right.

Wasn't Leonardo Da Vinci, Italian Renaissance genius, an insane man too? Of course, how could a sane man think about flying in those days? Only angels could do that. Or do research on inventions which were downright absurd?

But what about the common men? Well, aren't we the same ones who commit 'absurd' and 'insane' acts. Sometimes out of boredom, sometimes driven by emotions. A normal man has the ability to implode at anytime. Once the man's perspective changes, or is blinded by a belief or so forth, that person can do acts that can put a question mark on humanity itself.

Jack Torrance, is a great example, I must say.

Pink Floyd, in one of their songs have got this paraphrase, which speaks a lot, if pondered upon.

"...I've always been mad , I know I've been mad, like most of us have. They have you explain why you're a madman even if you're not mad..."

Makes a lot of sense, if you think about it. Madness is what made all the changes in this world. Wasn't this a little madness that made Wright Brothers try 'flying'? Or people like Galileo, who even got imprisoned for his 'insane' thoughts, which in fact were truths. Nikola Tesla was a crazy man too, played with electricity and God-knows what kind of mumbo jumbo. I guess Cesare Lombroso was right when he said "Genius is one of the many forms of insanity."
Same insanity caused World Wars, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, suicide bombings, assassinations and so forth.

So, even though I reckon you might be getting all fuzzed up about insanity and might soon be closing this post soon and think of doing something 'saner', but do think about it for a while, and ask yourself "Are we all Insane?" You might be surprised what your mind may answer sooner or later.

Social Networks, Humour and Insulting.

There's a certain thing about using social networks. You can speak on whatever you want to speak on, and then simply move on, as if nothing happened. People sitting behind their computer screens, doing stuff they want to do, and yet are not affected by it in their 'real' lives (Please note that this 'real' life is becoming rare these days).

What I observed in my time spent on these networks is the use of something called humour. We all love humour, don't we? Who can ignore the use of witty phrases, hilarious play of words or sarcasm? Right?

Well, the social network that I chose here is, Twitter. You can tweet (post an update) on anything. Mention (tag other people) and start a conversation. Take part in hashtags-based tweeting and so forth. Most of the times, these tags are quite humourous and very witty. But like all the other things, it has its darker aspects too. Quite often, Twitter is used to insult other people in the name of humour. Personal/ indirect attacks and public bashing. Well, making fun of other people in your Timeline (The news feed on twitter) is something that happens a lot, but then everything has its limits. What I have been noticing is a dramatic increase in indirect and personal attacks on other people, the use of their personal information for the sake of humour and so forth. Seriously? All you can do is sit behind your computer screens all day and simply make fun of others, rather insult them? Discuss about people indirectly?

Make sure before you insult someone that you are carbon-based life-form too, and when something strikes you, you feel it as well. I do believe that humour is a necessity, specially these days, when so much gloom is around us, but why pull people in it and cross limits, eh? Will it do any good? I am sure not. Such incidents have long-term effects. Remember, when a word leaves your mouth, it can never be taken back. There's no rewind button to turn back time either. So be careful when you do such stuff, as what goes around, comes around.

True Story : The Missing Boy

This incident happened a couple of weeks back, in my neighbourhood.

There was a boy who worked in a shop in my neighbourhood. He was 17 year old. It was a repair shop, and dealt with home appliances such as refrigerators, air conditioners etc. He had been working on that shop for about 3 years. When I first saw him (he came with the shop's owner to our house to check our air conditioner) the first thing I noticed was the innocence on his face. His untidy hairs, low voice were simply some aspects that I noticed. I always feel for these little kids doing such work. I feel sadness. I always felt the same emotion whenever I saw that boy. Though, I must let you know that the shop owner was really caring, he made sure the boy never felt down. He used to share his own food with him, and take care of him. He even taught him, like a teacher.

About a fortnight back, the boy disappeared. He was not found anywhere. Whole neighbourhood was worried because of this sudden disappearance. After some initial digging out by Police, some staggering leads were discovered. Another person, who had been dwelling in the area, for about 11 months, was also missing.

The person in question was a resident of Balochistan, and had been living in Hyderabad. Reportedly, his antics were kind of freaky. Firstly, he used to read Quran backwards (an important aspect of the concept of Black Magic) and used to do some weird stuff. Interestingly, some people in the neighbourhood used to sit with him late night, talk about stuff and eat food together. Some people thought it was really outrageous, because of the 'care' that the man was being given.

Some more digging out revealed that the boy was in Jamshoro, Sindh. On further investigation, train tickets were found in the man's hotel room. The man was under the scanner now, and was suspected of abducting the boy. The men who used used to hang out with him were taken away by Police and interrogated. They revealed some stuff, which helped Police trace the boy. Exactly two days back, on 17 June 2011, he was found and brought back to his home. But there's more to this story. The boy was asked by SHO (Station House Officer) why he ran away, and where is the man who 'abducted' him. Whatever boy said, was written down as a statement.

"I ran away, because I simply wanted to. No one kidnapped me. My parents used to be cruel to me, didn't give me enough food, though I used to earn for them. They abused me too. They beat me up. They were never kind to me. That's why I decided to run away from my family, so that I get rid of this stuff"

Yes, that's what the boy had to say, which revealed the real reason. It brought a big question mark on the faces of those who were accusing the man. As per some deductions, the man used to be very kind to the boy, used to give him money too. The boy found 'love' in that man. that he was never given in his own home, and decided to run away. The man has still not been found. God knows what was the man's intention, but definitely I cannot imagine a 'good' one.

This whole story, raises a big question. The behaviour of parents toward their children. What might happen if a child is mistreated, abused and beaten up for all the wrong the reasons? It also brings the concept of Child Labour to the perspective.

Being Judgemental, eh?

In our daily life, and within our society, we find something really interesting. We seem to be judges. Oh yes, we are judges. In fact, we judge people as if we are gods. A person, we are meeting for the very first time also falls under our effective 'judgement' and soon a blazing verdict is announced in our brains, accepted by our mind.

More interestingly, our judgements change the way we actually interact with that person. For example, there's a person who's self occupied, not because he's a bloody millionaire, but because he's got some personal issues and he can't help thinking about them. Another person who has seen that man for the first time, terms that man as a bloody narcissist.

"Goddamn idiot! Just look at him! He's not even bothering to look around! I would never talk to such a man"

Oh boy! That was a quick decision. The guy has got remarkable ability to judge others. NOT.

So many times, we misjudge people. We judge them only because of a single thing and based on that opinion (which is strictly their own) make it a fact. And my dear friends, it never ends there. We pick up that opinion, term it as a fact and then present it in front of others.

"Mate, don't even think about going close to that person"
"Oh! You mean Martin?"
"Hell yes! He's a bloody ignorant person! That day he scolded an old man down the road!"
"You've got to be f****** kidding me!"
"It's true dude! I saw it with my own eyes! My own goddamn eyes!"
"Oh God. Thank you for letting me know. I was thinking about approaching him for some society related work!"
"My pleasure man! Be careful"

Aha! That man was definitely a bloody cruel being. But wait? Aren't we being judgemental too by saying that? Let's know the whole story now.

That man often donated the money to that old man. Who promised and assured that it was being spent to do a little business. That day, the man found out the that old man was buying drugs and using them. He was using the same money.
That's where our Mr. Judgemental comes into the picture. He knew nothing at all about the background of this issue. All he saw was that scold. Without even thinking about the context, he made a judgement and mentioned it in front of the other person. Setting up picture in his mind, of that person, with a big cross on it.

So often, we say that first impression is the last impression. I believe this concept is simply rubbish. What if the circumstances, or the fate itself ends up screwing up the first impression? What then? You just sit there and start singing "Hallelujah" or even better "I'm just a kid"....

Honestly speaking, this whole judging thing is controversial. The more you talk about it, the more aspects spring out and hence more arguments.

For me, judging so quickly, is not right. That's it. I rest my case.

Friendship: A Beautiful Relation

Friendship.

To some, this word would mean nothing. For some it would mean everything.

What is friendship, people often wonder. Some of them believe it is just an aspect of one's life, and helps you get through, but is never supposed to mean anything when it comes to long term relationships. Some people believe that friendship is one of the most beautiful relationships ever made. Certainly, the latter theory is stronger than the former. But can a relationship like this ever be forced?

Consider the following story. Someone, wants to be your friend. You accept it. You both share a lot of stuff, in fact, the person takes a lot of help from you. You spend your time, to help him out, guide him where he's weak. He learns a lot. Time passes, and supposedly, the bond gets stronger. Soon, your paths separate. You go somewhere else, while the person goes to some other place. After some early talks, and stuff, he finally stops contacting you. In fact, that person starts ignoring you. You wonder and wonder, and finally realize the bitter truth. It was never a friendship. It was simply a one sided relationship. The person, who befriended you, was simply there, to gain benefits. He learned a lot from you, but the friendship is never about being an opportunist. It is about mutual understanding, it's about friendship itself.

Such fake friends, are like parasites. They take benefits from you, and in the end damage you. Such relationships are hollow. They might looks 'solid' but that's just an illusion.

To make a bond, mutual understanding is required. There's something called 'connection' that develops between friends as the time passes. You start feeling what the other one is feeling. It might sound absurd, and quite baseless, but believe me, you can only feel it. You start knowing what the other person is thinking. Sometimes you find a great friend, simply by luck. Fate intervenes, and you end up getting a wonderful friend.

But what about testing a friend? Is it required? Well, a real friend will always be with you. Let it be a thunderstorm, or a calm blue sky, that friend will always be there. A real friend stays while the 'fake' friends leave when you are in trouble. They never cared about you, all they ever cared about were their own 'benefits' and how to get them from you.

But beware, too much acid tests anywhere would damage the subject. Same happens in a relationship. If you test it again and again, it would start getting weaker, and there would come a time when it would become hollow, and break, just like a dry twig.

Remember, true friends are harder to find. If you do find them, take care of them. Because, when millions are against you, your true friend will be with you, side by side, ready to protect you.

So, never lose your friends. They're gifted by God, hold them close to your heart. Accept their weaknesses, have faith in their strengths.

Into the Life of an Enigma : Z.H

During a recent visit to a city, which I cannot name, I had the chance of meeting one of the greatest personalities ever to have roamed aimlessly on this planet. Due to some pretty amazing problems, we cannot use his name here. He will referred to as Z.H

As soon as I reached his home, I knew that this guy is awesome. I mean, tell me one person who has got a mummified body attached to his place's main gate? But this guy, has got it ! Simply amazing. As soon as I entered his house, I felt the mesmerizing aroma. What the hell was the aroma called, I had no idea, but who cares. For a moment, I thought, maybe this was some kind of drug, but I knew Z.H was not a druggie, so I passed the thought instantly.

As soon as I entered the house, for a moment it occurred to me I was in British Museum (heck, I have never visited it, but hey, it looked that way somehow). I found a couple of shrunken heads which resembled a dictator involved in exploding mangoes. As I moved inside the house, I noticed some people wearing red clothes, chanting Iqbal's poetry, while watching Glee on a big screen. I failed to comprehend this whole situation, after all I am not Z.H. After a brief visit of the house, including the sight of Holy Grail, Alexander The Great's sword and Hitler's underwear, I finally met Mr. Z.H. What a moment that was. I almost had nirvana, but then realized I was just a common man, who works as an accountant on weekdays.

The conversation started with Z.H. I was amazed by his attire. He wore a different sort of 'Shalwar Kameez', and a red coloured 'cap'. Though, I had no intentions of spying on him, but from the corner of my eye, I noticed a guy copying stuff from old books and updating them on twitter. I looked away, and tried to concentrate on Z.H again. I also noticed a 'hookah', which had a Chelsea flag wrapped around it. Wow, I had whispered. After a while he asked whether I had a Facebook account, I politely said no, to which he nodded and asked whether I use Orkut or Skype? I said Yes, I do use Skype. He then told me that he gives free explanations of Iqbal's work every Friday evening. He also mentioned that he participates in a holy ritual every Saturday night, and it is at that exact moment that a certain bald singer calls him and asks if his latest song was a hit. He soon told me how he played chess with Bahadur Shah Zafar, in 1857, and how that habit was the result of Mughal downfall.

Time was almost crawling like a pervert in front of a private hotel, and I was listening to Z.H and observing. Soon, the sensitive issue of Cricket was touched. I asked him whether has any love for the game? He cleared his throat and then said...

See, my friend, I love cricket. What a game it is, seriously. I still remember that exact moment, when Don Bradman came to me while I was practising in nets, and said in his Australian accent that I am the future of cricket. I was so humbled, that I almost danced naked on the streets of Adelaide. But I had no intentions of attracting unwanted attraction of course, if you know what I mean. I lost my interest a bit though, after India won the World Cup in 1983, and almost declared a war and planned the captain's smacking outside his home, but then I breathed slowly and removed the thought from my mind. I had an awesome moment though, when I bowled Ravi Shastri by an inswinging delivery, which he failed to understand, the ball swung so much, that it demolished all the stumps, and was so quick that it burned Ravi Shastri's pads. Good old days. And yes, a recent video of me playing cricket on the streets became viral.

I was so perplexed by Z.H's memories, that I almost lost my sanity. I knew it was getting late, so I asked Z.H if I may leave now, he nodded and gave me some books which had odd titles like "War of Independence 3002" and "Who knew my love could be an Alien from another planet" and so on. I thanked him. He came along with me to the main gate, and then said that he'll tell me the story of Ramesses II sometime later, and then he touched the mummy. Z.H hugged me like crazy after that and then he said...

"Come back later, son, and yes, do let me know your Skype ID"

Please Note: This whole story is based on fiction, and any resemblance found is of course, intentional. The term Z.H refers to a famous personality in Pakistan, who wears a Red cap, and loves talking about stuff we only find in pulp fiction. Beauty: An Element of Mystery

What is beauty? According to one school of thought, it's nothing but an opinion, as differences lie in the way a person perceives beauty. This, is true to some extent too. Something beautiful for one person, may be simply ugly to someone else.

It is often said that "Beauty lies in the eyes of Beholder", but is it true? If you ask me, then definitely.

As I mentioned earlier, and quite clearly too, that the standards of beauty vary from person to person. For example, a flower to you might look simply amazing, but to someone else, it might not be as 'amazing' as you thought. So, what does that actually mean? Why not bring Confucius, the great Chinese philosopher's thoughts here? According to him...

“Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it”

Read it once, you won't understand it, read it twice, then you'll start understanding it. This shatters the concept of 'Beauty standards' and simply says "Everyone is beautiful, but hardly everyone understands that"

If someone tells you that you are beautiful, then you must accept it gleefully, and be thankful to God. But in many cases, the recipient simply rejects it. Rather, imposes that he/ she is simply ugly, one of the most terrible creatures ever made and what not. Initially, it shocks the person who originally complimented, but if the 'rejection' remains like this, then it soon becomes downright terrible for the person who praised. I mean, why would you reject if someone, who might be your true friend, compliments about you, in all honesty? If you're rejecting that, then you're also rejecting God, which is not a good thing, in my humble opinion.

Secondly, if the matter of beauty is based on opinion, then why call someone ugly? Or degrade someone? Or compare people? It not only hurts the people who are being targeted, but is completely wrong too! What if a person, who is reportedly the most beautiful person, is also the most cruel by nature? Certainly, that person deserves the title even then, right? Such is the situation these days, sadly. One must understand that if facial features matter, then there is no need to judge someone's deeds.

Everyone is beautiful, I am beautiful. Because God has made me that way. You have no right to say that I am ugly. Believe, that you are beautiful. Believe, that no one has the right to judge you. Believe, what you believe. I wish we could all understand this, and make Earth a beautiful place to live in. As Michael Jackson once said

Anyone up for Pakistan ?

Such slogans and statements our very popular among the so-called 'residents' of Pakistan who believe in separatism. One has to wonder that why such differences exist at all, but then one also believes that this whole agenda is nothing new. Even during the partition in 1947 such elements came up and demanded separate states. Remarkably, and rather amazingly, such 'beliefs' are prevalent due to many reasons. For one, these beliefs were sowed into the minds of people by some 'leaders' and secondly, not just the leaders, the ignorance of 'us'.

While the mistreatment of 'our' own people towards them has been present throughout the history since 1947, particularly 1971, when Bangladesh came into being, but such movements have got deeper roots.
If we talk about some movements present within Pakistan, we often listen words such as Sindhudesh, Greater Balochistan, Punjabistan and Pakhtoonistan. These words and names are self explanatory, for they reflect states of Pakistan.

As discussed earlier, our own mistreatment is also responsible along with the imposing beliefs of these people. The most controversial question then comes up. Is Balochistan also suffering from the same disease ? The answer is yes. Throughout the history Balochistan never got the respect it deserves, their youth is often targeted, and after years and years of brewing, many of them do not 'believe' in Pakistan anymore. I mean, that does makes sense, doesn't it ? Imagine yourself here, you are being neglected a lot in your family, no one really cares about you, rather tries that they get their own benefits from you and then simply avoid you. What will you do ? I am pretty sure that now you get the picture.

Let's take another perspective now. On 30th of March 2011, a very important cricket match between India and Pakistan was being played. It was the semi final of Cricket World Cup 2011. It was one of those days when we just had 'Pakistan' in our minds. The only color you noticed that day was Green. People were feeling proud, that they were Pakistanis. But hang on, there's a very odd story that I would like to narrate. One of my friends, who lives in an area of Hyderabad, where there are people of different ethnicities living together, told me that something very terrible happened on the day when match was being played. A few people, were wearing Pakistan Team shirts, and reportedly were Peoples Party supporters. They were watching the match on a big screen, and shouting for Pakistan, when some people, who were from a Sindh liberation party started abusing them, and that was not all. After a while they started beating them, brutally and said "Ham naheen mante Pakistan ko! Sirf Sindhudesh ! Aur kuch bhi naheen!" (We do not believe in Pakistan! Only Sindhudesh! Nothing else at all!) I was speechless when I heard this story, but I knew that this was not all.

University of Sindh, Jamshoro is the second oldest university of Pakistan. Located in the heart of Sindh, it serves a very large number of students throughout the whole province. Sadly, that is just one side of the picture. University of Sindh is plagued by politics, right down to its core. In fact, it is so strong there, that students are defended and promoted with the strength of political parties. To give a reflection of the situation there, is a very difficult thing to do. About 2 months back, a student was killed in daylight there. Reason ? Well, he was the brother of a politically active person, though he himself had no affiliation, but the opposing party found that killing him would be a sweet revenge.

What followed were 'temporary' arrests and 2 weeks boycott of the university. If you found this story outrageous, then I must tell you that this is only a common thing there. Some students were murdered just because of party enmities. Some students were kidnapped too. Usually the political parties there somehow initially, try to help a student, and if the student accepts that, then indirectly the student becomes a part or it, followed by spontaneous demands of funds, bad blood with other students (belonging to opposing parties) etc. Government schools and colleges are also suffering from this type of cancer. You'll see large flags in the premises of these institutions. This whole dilemma results in more differences, and hence stereotypes which simply act as a fuel for hatred in a society like this.

The problem is, that political parties based on ethnicities will always create troubles and manipulate the people belonging to that culture. Take a look around, and you'll understand what I mean. The same perception creates hatred, and usually becomes a problem in the development of the country. An Urdu speaking person has been told by people around him that Punjabi speaking people are haters, while a Pathan is often joked about and told by people that they're nut jobs, the humor soon becomes blasphemy. Who can forget the hatred fuelled by parties ragainst Baloch people? No one. Of course, I am not talking about majority of people here, but this is a fact that such thing happens, and I myself have seen this a lot.

Amidst issues such as terrorism and corruption that this land is infected with, such discriminations play a very important role too. But how exactly can we get rid of this ? Difficult question. First and foremost we need to start loving each other. Think above everything. Think like a Pakistani. Secondly, stop thinking like a victim. If you are being harassed in the name of ethnicity, or are being abused, then stop making a stereotype. It is an individual that is abusing or mistreating you. Why blame each and every Pathan and frame them when only one such person has caused your trouble ? Why blame everyone and declare a war ? Why promote hatred ? Pathetic act. One must also understand the sensitivity of the issues, and hence the role of Government. Government's constant neglect and mistreatment with people is also responsible for such situation.

It hurts too. The Pakistanis who see such people living on their land often get disheartened. But this is not the time for emotions, this is the time to act. We seriously need to get our act together, and start thinking like a Pakistani. Start being a Pakistani.

Pride in Defeat for The Fighters

Yes folks, we did lose against India. Adding to the misery was my sickness, constant text messaging, unavailability of my computer and so forth.

But I don't care. I am not going to listen to all the shit some idiots have to say, like the match was fixed and so on.

In all honesty, I have always been a die-hard optimistic Pakistan fan (Pakistan and Optimism are synonyms, I believe firmly)

I will keep on supporting my lads and would never give up on them. They reached the Semi Finals, against all odds. All the trio mumbo jumbo, drama queen wicket keeper and what not. I am proud of my lads, and hence, this poem is dedicated to them...

Green Power Destroys Calypsos

What a day it has been for Pakistanis and the people who support Team Pakistan ! West Indies was totally squashed by Team Pakistan (though, Roach was the only one who was supposed to be exterminated, but I guess we were following 'take no prisoners' approach)

Though, it was more of an overall team performance by bowlers, lead by Afridi, but the inclusion of Saeed Ajmal totally changed the game. We all knew that he's a wicket taking bowler, and would be more than handy in front of West Indies line up (not to forget, the pseudo Rahat Fateh Ali Khan factor too). Though, we once again lost the toss, but the way we bowled and fielded was quite amazing. From the moment Gayle was dismissed, till the moment Kamran hit the winning runs (It's true, I am damn sure it was him hitting that four, he's unmistakable) Pakistan was never looking away from the objectives. They knew it was Pakistan day, and they knew how to use it in your favor, yes, I have no idea why I actually wrote that.

This World Cup win against West Indies has definitely settled a couple of scores. The 2007 World Cup loss and also the 1992 World Cup loss, when they defeated us by 10 wickets. Revenge is a dish best served cold, a Spanish proverb....and how aptly it is matching the revenge description...sweet.

Oddly, throughout the match, I was having the film 300 in the back of my head. So, I even shouted, Tonight we dine in hell, as well as tweeted it.

But then, our Lala is still way cooler than Gerard Butler (sorry, Butler-loving ladies)

Kangaroos are Served

Exactly, same thing happened today. Kangaroo Curry. Australia faced complete demolition by the hands of Pakistan. 12 years before, Pakistan was the last team to defeat them in a World Cup match (1999 World Cup, Headingley). Though, both teams met again in the Final, but Pakistan were totally blown away.

But from now onwards 19th March 2011 would be a date forever remembered, the day when Pakistan ended Australia's World Cup winning streak.

The pitch, looked quite tricky. Soon, we came to know it was not an ordinary track. It was Two-faced (I miss you Batman), with odd bounce. Soon Pakistani bowlers, led by Umar Gul, shattered Australia dismissing them for 176 runs, involving good fielding, excellent keeping by our 'keeper' and Ricky Ponting's facial expressions too.

Honestly speaking, Pakistan faced a difficult task. Chasing is something that Pakistan is a bit reluctant to do. Add to that reluctance, there was swing/ seam factor, a tricky pitch and chasing under lights (I ignored these factors when Pakistan started their chase, ignorance is bliss, period). Hafeez got dismissed first, followed by Kamran. It was the partnership between Younis and Asad, and later on Asad and Umar Akmal that settled the ship. Also, those two fours by Razzaq just provided extra spice to the win !

Brad Haddin. What a man. During a brawl, on the field, the guy PUSHED Younis Khan. The most humble, down-to-earth player of Pakistan currently, and one of the humblest around the world. What Younis wanted, with a smiling face, was to settle the issue, but Haddin, oh well, he had other plans. He pushed Younis, and look what happened, Haddin got dismissed later on, followed by the collapse and then ultimately his team lost the match. Silly, what the hell were you trying to do? Huh ? Better go and bury yourself, it's better that way.

Secondly, what the hell was on Ian Chappell's mind ! He was acting like the Mayor of gaga land ! For the duck's (Kindly, avoid replacing D with F) sake man ! I mean why was he bashing and ranting against Pakistanis, when his own team was doing nothing spectacular ? ! I just wish Ian Botham had jumped at him at that exact moment and broken his teeth.

Well, I am pretty ecstatic. Kangaroos are really delicious, I tried them with noodles !

He bowled extremely well, his celebrations after those wickets, like a happy ballerina, wow, pure awesomeness ! Totally loved it.
Jokes apart, he bowled very well. I should have mentioned him, but guys, it's a Pakistani win ! Let us cherish it ! 12 years of pain, including St. Lucia, Sydney, 1999 WC, 2003 WC...

The Conclusion of a Great Story

I woke up this morning, and as usual, checked my cell first, I was going through the text messages when I found @MOHAMMAD_umar 's text message...

"F*** ! Shoaib Akhtar Retiring! F***"

For a few moments I failed to understand. My lazy grey cells, as Hercule Poirot calls them, simply denied this revelation. I skipped this text, and checked other ones. Sadly, I was not dreaming. There were around 15 text messages which simply said "Shoaib Akhtar set to retire". I couldn't believe it...

I still remember what happened to me when I read about Michael Jackson's death just after waking up on June 25, 2009. My best friend's text shattered me "Michael Joseph Jackon is no more. Rest in Peace". I can never forget that feeling.

The same feeling pulled the ground beneath me, when I woke up on August 29, 2010 (It was around 3 am, for Sehri) to find about the News of the World's exposé of Spot Fixing within the Pakistan Team. I still remember what happened with me, I failed to comprehend the situation, and had no one to comfort me.

It was somewhat the same today, but there was a single emotion over that almost drowned me. It was sorrow.

I have always been a die hard fan of Shoaib, regardless of the controversies. There was also a time when I was depressed because of his scandals, but I knew the guy still had it. Last year, when Shoaib made a comeback, and played domestic T20 competition, my uncle was also here (on a visit, from India). He is a fan too, of Shoaib. We were talking about him, as he kept bowling for Islamabad Leopards, setting off from his mark and scaring the hell out of batsmen. My uncle said "Look at him! His pace is just so awesome! He can still do it!" I listened to him for a while, and then said "You know uncle, Geoff Lawson, who coached Pakistan in 2007-08 recently said that Shoaib was the most careless cricketer he ever came across". My uncle smiled, and then said "I don't care. He's an artist, he has God-gifted talent. A person with such a talent can act crazy at times, but it is the responsibly of the captain, coach to make sure they get the best out of him" I nodded and agreed.

My love for Shoaib Akhtar increased a million times when he made his comeback, last year, in 2010. His performance in Asia Cup 2010, the whole tour of England (including T20s Vs. Australia), then the series in UAE against South Africa and later on in New Zealand. I loved the way he bowled during the England-Pakistan ODI series, right after Spot Fixing scandal. With all the pressure, and the criticism, he led the bowling attack, and the way he dedicated himself on the field, was just breathtaking.

Currently playing his last World Cup, and his last International tournament/ series, he has done well so far too. The best delivery was when he dismissed Jayawardene, and added him to the hall of shame by taking down the middle stump.

Shoaib Akhtar said that his biggest accomplishment was 'being an honest man'. These words echo, what a man he is. Regardless of being thrashed by issues both on and off the field, he never backed down. He was like that Hero is epics, who never gave up and kept coming back, destroying his enemies.

Who can forget that plane celebration ? Who can forget the rants ? Who can forget the dirty brawls ? Who can forget Shoaib's finger, as he pointed toward the batsmen ? No one.

I am pretty sure that he'll do his best against Australia on March 19th and then later on in the Quarter Finals. I want him to dismiss every batsman, and etch a deep mark on the mind of every cricket lover out there. If this is his swan song, I want him to do his best. People like Shoaib Akhtar are irreplaceable. Though, I can never do him justice by writing about him, because words will always defy me, but just like Shoaib, I will never give up.

Shoaib, go and rock the world ! We will always love you, and respect you.

Pakistan Vs. Zimbabwe

First of all, thanks a lot to that odd man in the crowd, you kept on shooting at the clouds, hence the rain. Well done mate, you almost caused a flood.

So, we did win after all. Zimbabwe, interestingly, chose to bat first under relatively difficult batting conditions. Once the top order was removed by Razzaq and Gul, I swear I saw a guy came out with drinks and pointed toward the crowd. Almost everyone missed it, even the umpires. He was pointing toward the 'cloud shooting' man that I mentioned earlier. Do I sound like a conspiracy theorist ? Do let me know, I always try my best.

Though, the constant wickets ensured that Zimbabwe never got the score that they wanted in the first place. Also, the cloud shooter ended up ruining Zimbabwe's chances (Let's put a pin on that paradox).

The rain caused the reduction of overs. Pakistan were doing well, until Ahmad Shahzad's mind imploded and he danced down the track. It was not his fault, at all. He just remembered an old Indian film, and thought of trying out the dance move, sadly, Ray Price had watched the film too, and just bowled into the gap. Boo yeah, Taibu removed the ~~balls~~ bails. Hafeez played well for his 49, but couldn't bring up his 50. Afridi came on to the crease, after Hafeez got dismissed, but it was quite short lived, as he was bowled by Ray Price, by a quicker ball. Allegedly, he remembered at that exact moment, how Afridi bowls a faster one to get rid of batsmen.

Another highlight, and perhaps the biggest one, was Asad Shafiq's calm and composed knock of 78 not out. The way he played reminded me of Sir Hanif Mohammad (I still remember how he used to play those brilliant shots. I was not born then of course, but sometimes the old time machine can do wonders, you know). Also, unlike some other batsmen, he valued his wicket. In fact, he has performed whenever he has been given a chance. Also, I am in love with his cut shot. Also, he's quite cute, girls can pull his cheeks too, Like @Hafsa_Khawaja and @natashanoorani mentioned when they saw Asad and boys like me, can give him a brotherly hug. Bhai to hai hi naa, yaar ? (He's a brother after all)

Okay, I guess I got way too emotional in this post. Let's become straight...I mean, let's come to the point again.

Next match would be against Aussies, on 19th March. It would be a big match too. I sincerely hope that we defeat them, and end their winning streak in the World Cup (In fact, the last time they lost a match in World Cup was in year 1999, when Pakistan defeated them in group stages). So, let's hope for a good one !

I won't do any calculations, about the Quarter finals, at all. Do I look like the guy who would write this up and then do the calculations ? When he is actually believing that Pakistan can win this ? Yeah, I am sure you got the point, just like Gary Kirsten received THAT from Shoaib. It shouldn't hurt... not at all...

It was someone's birthday, it was another one's worst day.

Yes, our legendary goal keeper (no pun at all here, move away please) simply messed up the game. I am myself a team man, and I have support for every player, but yesterday, the black sheep (no offence to black sheep...bahhh) of our team did a jaw dropping effort to give Ross Taylor his BEST birthday gift ever. No wonder I was reminded of St. Lucia catastrophe (not a good memory, but it keeps haunting). Seriously, If I had written this post yesterday, it would have been getting monstrous hits, just because of really filthy swears. But, shoulda coulda woulda...didn't.

Apart from our goal keeper's shambles, it was just a downer, this game. The whole sixes and fours frenzy towards the end damaged us. Seriously, what the hell was Ross Taylor thinking ? Maybe Pakistan wanted him to do it, just for the sake of the disasters New Zealand has been going through.

Now, some serious thinking is required here. I am not kidding, but we seriously need to do a Haka before every match. Ross Taylor type people look like scaredy cats (by face at least), and if done properly, well, who knows we might win even before the second innings starts (I know it's lame, but Pakistan and Unimaginable are synonyms).

If you ask me (which, people rarely do, apart from some really good fellows, who talk to me as if I was a 400 year old cricketer) I would say, drop Mr. Akmal. Umar can keep, and quite well, as we saw in some of the matches. Secondly, it was good to see Razzaq playing a fine innings down the order, and that's why he should be promoted up the order. I am not sure about the No. 3 position though. But if that's done, I would interested to see if he could once again do well there.

Bowling was good, for most of the part of the innings, but in the end, disaster of catastrophic levels occurred, which destroyed all the efforts. Maybe in an alternate universe, we are already enjoying the win over New Zealand. Umar Gul was definitely pick of the bowlers (by an astronomical margin, and he batted well too). Afridi was going good too, but then our goal keeper shouted "Look Lala, no hands".

I think it's a better time to bring Saeed Ajmal, The Teesra man, back into the squad. It would be a good attacking option.

I have spoken a lot here.

(Here we go again) And yes, we seriously need to get rid of 'seasonal' fans. I mean, they were shouting like hell, running around naked and doing somersaults when Pakistan won 3 consecutive matches. But when Pakistan lost yesterday, they got their clothes back on, and said "Oh well, Pakistan were never favorites, and I guess no use supporting them". Well, I guess then you can go and watch some other team. Which never loses. Yes, in some other dimension, Utopian in nature. Get a life people. We needed a loss here, we needed to know our weaknesses. This is not the end of everything, no need to go into panic mode. Need to keep your heads together, and learn from a team which has got South African players. (It's not South Africa, Ahem ahem)

Well, once again, it's time for wishing luck ...and...

Pakistan Zindabad ! ! !

Pakistan smash past Canada

I had problems titling this post of mine, and then I thought, wait, I have to fit the word 'smash' there somehow. So I did fit it in !

Well done Team Pakistan. Not-so-awesome batting, and completely awesome bowling smashed Canada apart. No wonder we had to collapse in this match, after doing so well in the last few matches. Don't kill me, please, for saying this, but it's a good thing. A collapse now has assured that team will concentrate on batting more, and by keeping Pakistan in the back of our minds, we will also realize that a collapse 'now' would be better than a collapse 'later' in the tournament. If you get my point.

Pakistan collapsed due to quite a few things, in my opinion. Firstly the 'seaming and spinning' conditions did some damage, then poor shot selection too added to the cause. Also, we once again saw our very own Mr. Reliable (No offence to a certain fridge company), Misbah did good, until he got dismissed at the wrong time. We saw Umar Akmal play a fine innings too, under pressure. But I would give credit to Pakistani/ Indian errr... Canadian bowlers who restricted Pakistan, and tightened the screws.

Canada was going well, until...HE struck. Yes, HE was the one who demolished the opposition, while they dreamed of a win. Shahid "The Beast" Afridi grabbed 5 wickets to ensure that Canada's dream, is just an inception, and before it gets better, the 'kick' . (Yes I am an Inception fan)

To see Team Green work hard, perform passionately and the best of all, remain united, is indeed very awesome.

Also, something should be written about Balaji getting smacked on the face. The way he abused, and then the perfect response by Umar Gul, and then a killing finisher to his 'wild tactics' by Lala, courtesy an awesome run out...was simply epic. Also, he needs a good diet plan... and he looks a lot like Ramesh Powar to me...

Oh yes, I almost forgot...

Sri Lanka defeated !

We've defeated Sri Lankans... no, I am not acting like a hater here... but I am mimicking them. Lame joke I know, but who cares...

Okay, (lame) jokes apart, what a terrific win against Sri Lankans, who are termed as one of the favorites for the World Cup. Defeating them in their own home is like, totally awesome ! Super cool ! Also, it was a good game for the World Cup. Needed a close clash like this to spice things up.

This was the game when the Senior section of the team stood up and did the job. When batting the do-whatever-we'll-not-panic duo of Younis Khan and Misbah ul Haq settled the ship, and kept things running smoothly. When the turn came of the bowlers, Shahid Afridi led from the front once again, picking up 4 crucial wickets, at important time too. He was well supported by Shoaib, who grabbed 2 wickets, including a ripper which zipped passed Jayawardene's stronghold and struck the middle stump, leaving him shocked. Beauty !

Though, the game helped Pakistan to realize the aspects where they could be weak in. Apart from selection dilemma, we also dropped catches, while the legendary wicketkeeper, Ada- oops... I meant Kamran akmal missed couple of easy chances. Though, these fielding mistakes were seen after a lot of gap, but they should not be ignored, rather should be taken into consideration and avoided in the next matches.

Also, our Lala crossed 300 ODI wickets, getting Sangakkara as his 300th victim, which itself is a great achievement.

Yes, I do know I am late in posting this. I have valid reasons too.

1. I was sick.
2. Exams.
3. Aliens abducted me, calling me Pakistan's biggest fan.

Okay, so the third one is more plausible...and I am satisfied.

So, top performance by Pakistan in the opening match. Some of the people said that "It was against the side that speaks the language of Lion King" or "There was no Simba playing for them" or "Pakistan can only defeat teams like Kenya". Okay, much of this is fiction, but I did hear similar words. The point is, a win is a win. Against any nation, any place. Pakistan needed a good start in the World Cup, and they got a great start. Good batting performance by the batsmen, a much better innings by our little dynamite Umar Akmal was quite pleasing too. But we do need our openers to attack in the next match, and play positively. The pressure they imposed upon themselves eventually dismissed them.

The bowling was impressive too. Akhtar bowled well, but was unlucky. Razzaq's spell was fine. Gul and Rehman were good too. But the best amongst them was none other than Shahid Afridi ! Just see him getting those wickets !

Wow ! He increased his tally of career wickets to 297, and also took the honor of grabbing the best bowling figures for a captain in a World Cup match. The previous one was none other than KD83...

Spin would play a crucial role in this World Cup, and Afridi's skills would be required against bigger teams. Let's hope and wish he performs !

Important match coming up tomorrow. Vs. Sri Lanka. Let's hope Pakistan wins this one too !

The Decision

On February 5th, the spot fixing saga, that lasted almost 6 months, finally ended with trio getting the punishments of 5 years of essential bans. The way the events have progressed, it always whispered this decision. The whole media frenzy, player reactions, ICC's stance and so on, foretold the future of these players.

Discussion on the validity of this ban, is quite controversial, and I would not go into that . What I want to say is, that because of this whole issue, a bright prospect of the game, is nothing but a dark shadow now. I am talking about Mohammad Aamir. Though, one can disagree with me, saying Asif was a great bowler too. And I do agree. Not everyone has God-gifted skills. Mohammad Asif was one of those who had a magical wrist, and commanded the ball. He was always destined to make headlines, but sadly, the headlines were smudged by his own antics. If he has to look at someone for all the trouble, he better look in the mirror. But one must appreciate the way he kept his cool throughout the saga. He never gave any controversial interviews, he never stated anything terrible, he never appeared on a useless morning show too. Rather, he judged the situation, and decided to remain on the safer side.

The loss of Aamir is not irreplaceable. Pakistan's pace factory is still producing genuine pace products, with good skills. But the way Aamir suddenly made headlines everywhere, getting batsmen out in a manner, that was at times embarrassing for them, and sometimes He just performed the trick, and smiled, while the batsman just walked away. He was destined to be a class act, reminiscent of the great Wasim Akram. Sadly, it all turned out as a pleasant dream, for many, and ended up as a nightmare for all.

Pakistan has never been short of talent, and that's a fact. But to see such a talent, after receiving heaps of praise, to perish in such a way, is indeed sad.
This would be my last post on this whole saga. It is past now, and we must look forward, dare to look forward.

Pakistan wins ODI Series 3-2 Vs. NewZealand

What a series this has been, Pakistan finally got a winning combination, lots of positives, players leading from the front with their performances and great fighting spirit in the team too. Throughout the series Pakistan chased well, and defended well. Apart from the first ODI collapse, there was nothing like a collapse in the following matches.

Mohammad Hafeez, finally getting a century, and fine performances throughout the matches, both with bat and ball. Shahid Afridi leading from the front, along with Misbah who provided a strong hold to the team during batting. Good bowling performances by Wahab Riaz, Razzaq, Shoaib Akhtar and Gul. Afridi's bowling helped Pakistan break partnerships too. Young gun, Ahmad Shahzad a.k.a Young Pocket Rocket, proved his worth, as he kept providing good starts to the team, and also scored his maiden century in the 5th ODI. Younis Khan also got some important scores, which is a good sign for upcoming World Cup. Major disappointment of this series was Sohail Tanvir. He got chances, but couldn't utilize them properly. He did good stuff, but not on consistent basis. He won the 4th ODI for Pakistan when he played a superb little knock to ensure Pakistan chases the target down. He also played a good knock the the 6th ODI.

For now, though, he is required to do more with the ball in his hand. Kamran Akmal's comeback, was composed of some little knocks, and in the final ODI almost made a century. Good to see him do good for the team. Pakistan, now settled with Afridi as captain, and Misbah as V. Captain, is all set for the World Cup. This whole series, has completely united Pakistan, every player is trying his level best to do it for his country. It is encouraging to see senior players, making sure that things go in the right direction.

And I congratulate all the supporters of Team Green for first series win since November 2008. Green in the color of glory !

I would not blabber a lot. Yes, I know it's a GREAT occasion. We have defeated Kiwis 1-0, and won a Test series after 4 fudgin' years !
What a great performance, from every player out there. Some of the whiners might say that we were cowards to not pursue the win, and drawing the match. My dear fellows, would this mean that if we had collapsed while trying that, and 'handed' Kiwis a win, equaling the series 1-1, would have made you happy ? Sorry people, but the 'odd' personality inside you would have rebuked the same players, and the same team.

Under MBA Misbah, our ship is getting steadier and stronger in Tests. We are approaching things in a positive way, we are using different tactics to disengage the opposition and so much more. Also add his splendid form, 6 50s in 6 Test innings for him.

Today, when Pakistan's 3 wickets fell (a big thanks to glorious umpires for that, and not to forget some disciplined bowling upfront), the ship could have perished in the abyss. But with our very own MBA and Mr. Khan, we showed aggression, temperament and resistance to the Kiwi bowlers. But I must add that Kiwis were far too negative/ offensive today. Appealing for almost anything (I was beginning to wonder whether Vettori was going to appeal, about an evil presence above his head, but that's another matter).
By the way, thanks to ESPNCricinfo and this blog, I have got some awesome stats, which would have made Sir Bradman smile...

Cricket's Alternate History or just another Pathetic story ?

This particular incident happened on February 27, 2009 in our last class at university, of Accounting. An informal presentation session was going on. A student of our batch, whose name was Jameel, and who belonged to a Village near Hala Town, Sindh, came in front of the class to present. The topic was 'Myself'.

After he was done (barely a minute) our Teacher asked us for questions regarding Jameel.
So, what happens in following minutes is this...

A friend of mine raised his hand, our teacher said "Ask your question..."

Friend: So Jameel, why do you play Cricket? And why do you actually like it?

Jameel (Hesitant) : Well, you see, I like it, but you know, a Molvi (Priest) Sahab once came to our Village from another town he said that 'Cricket' is the game of Sikhs...

Teacher interrupted: Say again? Sicks?

Jameel: No sir, you know Sikhs...? Sikhs...

Teacher nodded and said: Okay go ahead...

Jameel : So he said that Sikhs play this game because of their...beliefs, you know, they go according to stars, which are 5 and 6, making 11 and 11 is the same number, you know...in a team in cricket.

I interrupt: But Jameel, As far as History tells us, Cricket was started by Englishmen....

Teacher: Okay, let him speak...

Jameel: So he said that Cricket is 'Haraam' (forbidden in Islam). Sikhs enjoy it when a Sixer is struck; because it's their star number

Another boy interrupts: What? No no! It's silly!

I interrupted again: No sir, this is just misconception, a silly propaganda at most!

A buy sarcastically adds: Oh, then why Mr. Jameel, you play such sport, when you think it’s Haraam?

Jameel hesitated and then said : I got no other work at village…

Now are you understanding how much you can manipulate things, and make them look like facts ? And how people believe them, and are too 'faithful' to refer to history books for that matter, or the concerned texts ? A food for thought...indeed.

Pakistan squash Kiwis

After the loss of T20 series 2-1, including the end of the year T20 thumping over Kiwis, Pakistan has started the year 2011, and a new decade, on a winning note. A win which lies somewhere in between being remarkable, amazing and incredible.

Pakistan's determined batting, and the inspiring bowling resulted in a thumping win over Kiwis. No one thought the game would end on the 3rd Day. Thanks the contribution by each and every batsman in Pakistani line-up (barring Hafeez), Pakistan reached 367 runs with a lead of 92 runs.Notably innings of Misbah and Asad made sure Pakistan are safe. The lower order also made sure that runs come by.

Kiwis were simply bamboozled by Pakistani bowlers. Despite a decent opening stand, Kiwis collapsed dreadfully, on a placid pitch. Kiwis folded for just 110 runs. Rehman, Wahab and Gul took 3 wickets each. It is indeed Pakistan which can initiate a collapse like this. Earlier in Sydney, then Leeds, then at The Oval, Australia and England got the treatment. Kiwis were dismissed in one session, 38.3 overs exactly. Amazing, no ?

Pakistan just needed 19 runs to win. Hafeez made sure he didn't get out without scoring, and along with Taufeeq, scored the required runs, winning the match and getting a lead in the series, of 1-0.

I hope they keep on doing well, and win the 2nd Test too.

Cricinfo, strikes again.

So, our supreme savior of Cricket on Internet has pulled off another legendary gaffe... or an intentional gig ?
While covering the last third of 2010, in terms of Cricket events (on and off-field, both) Cricinfo ignored, four big achievements of Pakistan in that. They ignored Abdul Razzaq's blistering ton to squash Proteas on 31st of October 2010, Umar Gul and Yasir Arafat's inclusion in Guinness book of World Records in late December, Tanvir Ahmed's 6 wickets on debut in 2nd Test Vs. Proteas, in November and Shahid Afridi, on becoming the first man to take 50+ wickets in T20 Internationals on 30-11-2010.

Now, what I want to question is, is that the right way ? They can cover a 'record' breaking innings of a school boy, and ignore such great performances in International arena, that too of Pakistan ? The only thing I can read about Pakistan is its 'second-by-second' updates on Spot-Fixing and Zulqarnain's runaway performance.
What I want to say is that, how can you miss the BEST ODI innings of 2010 so easily ?? When you can cover 50s, why ignore such a marvel ? That does look more than a 'small' error.
It is worst when you mingle facts with opinions, and create the hell out of 'piece' for Cricket fans. Even though the site is best for facts, but it's losing its credibility in terms of many things, notably opinions.
I leave my case to the public now.

Sehwag's Incident : Fact or Fiction ?

A video which was taken from Sahara India Sports Awards 2010 started getting viral in Cricketing circle. The reason ? Indian batsman Virender Sehwag is called on the stage by Shahrukh Khan. After some frolics, Shahrukh asks Sehwag to speak about a sledging incident. Shying away at first, and acting rather innocent, he eventually told a story. He said that he was batting around '200' runs and Sachin Tendulkar was on the non-strike end.

Pakistani speed demon, Shoaib Akhtar was bowling bouncers at Sehwag, while saying "Hook maar ke dikha" which was rather provoking, as Akhtar wanted Sehwag to play the hook shot, and get dismissed that way. Akhtar kept on bowling bouncers, then eventually Sehwag said to Akhtar "Woh tera baap khara hai non-striker end pe, usko bol woh maarke dikhayega" which translates to "That is your father standing at non-striker end, he will play hook shot". In the next over, Akhtar bowled the short ball again, and this time Sachin was on the strike, and he hit a 6 off that ball. Then Sehwag spoke to Akhtar "Beta beta hota hai, baap baap hota hai" which means "Father is a father, and son's a son"

Wow. A very nice and 'spicy' story. Also keeping in touch with the Indo-Pak rivalry. But wait... there seems to be some problem here... actually, this is untrue, if we go by the facts Sehwag mentioned... Let's analyze...

Sehwag mentions that he was around the 200 mark. If we just broaden the range a bit, we'll be able to include his 100+ scores Vs. Pakistan. Also, there would be some other conditions applying here. In the test match, three of the concerned players, i.e Sehwag, Sachin and Akhtar should be present. Let's look at the 100+ scores of Sehwag Vs. Pakistan...

Virender Sehwag has scored 100+ runs against Pakistan exactly 4 times.

He scored 309 runs at Multan. In 2004. In this match, three of them were playing. Interestingly, there was no six next to Sachin's name in this test.

Bang Bang Razzaq

Could the title have been more appropriate ? I had many options... "Sir Abdul Razzaq" or "Razzler", or maybe "Fauji/ Chunni Babu" (which Afridi calls him) or how about "Razzmatazz" (which is also my favorite among his many nicknames). But I chose Bang Bang Razzaq which not only summarizes his class as batsman, but also makes bowlers shiver before they even bowl to him...

He was once great with both ball and bat, he used to take quick wickets and break the partnerships on a constant basis. He still takes wickets, but not on a regular level. But he is still a force to reckon with when batting. When he hits, the ball obeys and lands out of the field. The bat is like a weapon (Ash's Boomstick from Evil Dead might be the one that I can compare it with! Boom Slash Bang Swipe!) which can just demolish the opposition's confidence, the bowlers and what not.....

On his Birthday (2 December 1979) here are some magnificent exhibitions of his genius and immense talent, little cameos or brutal slaughterings. Chunni Babu Forever !

Pakistan wins 2 Gold medals at Asian Games in a day

It was Pakistan's day all over ! Pakistan defeated Malaysia in the Squash championship winning the Gold after 12 years...and then Pakistan defeated Malaysia 2-0 to win the AsianGames Men's Hockey title after 20 years ! Rehan Butt and Sohail Abbas scored the 2 goals to seal Pakistan's win. It was Pakistan's first win in 16 years at International level competition, and speaks a lot about the hunger and thirst of lads for an event win ! This proves that Hockey is not finished in Pakistan, all it needs it proper and effective management. Proud of you lads!

End of 2-Match Test Series Vs. Proteas

The 2nd Test between Pakistan and South Africa was drawn today at Dubai. But it is more than a draw for Pakistan, in fact it's more than a victory on all terms. The resistance of Pakistani batsmen on Day 5 showed a frame of mind that had been absent from the tours of Australia and England earlier this year.

Young players did a great job, showed class and temperament. Seniors players chipped in with good knocks and helped other players. I am really happy to see Azhar Ali showing determination, the boy really has got the attitude to play test matches. Asad Shafiq also scored a 50 on debut, while another debutant Tanvir Ahmed took 6 scalps in his first ever international test innings. Hafeez and Taufeeq played well as openers, and should now be made permanent in that place. Younis Khan's comeback was remarkable, and a rather tight slap on the faces of Mr. You-Know-Who.

Adnan Akmal showed fine performance, batted fine, kept well (a lot better than his elder brother, and his 'behind-the-stumps' blabbering was totally hilarious and amazing...at least he has got a better sense of humor than Kamran!) Also, Mohammad Sami was a disappointment once again as he failed to grab his 13th comeback, also helped by some really bad umpiring. Abdur Rehman also chipped in bowling as well as batting, also was the main rescuer when Pakistan were close to a forced follow-on. Pakistan's next tour would be a long one, against Kiwis at their home, playing 3 T20Is, 2 Tests and 6 ODIs. This series would be an important one, as World Cup will follow right after.

The Aragorn returns

Yes. Indeed. He has returned. And when I say he has returned, I meant The Great Younis Khan, the Aragorn of Pakistan Cricket. Both of them share many things. The ability to lead, the hunger and determination to be there till the end. To be as humble as possible, while conquering hearts and minds.
When we talk about Younis Khan, it's his courage, his mind, his plans and above all his 'Smile'.
In this Cricket era, the 'killing' smile is always considered to be possessed by the person who has 800 Test scalps to his name. Yes, Mutiah Muralitharan. He's the one. The 'assassin' smile some say. But with Younis it's completely different. His smile implodes the opposition. He takes everything on himself, and returns it with a smile.
His majestic innings in the 2nd Innings of the 1st Test Vs. South Africa was a clear reminder to Mr. Ijaz Butt what a class act he actually was destroying. His determination was top-notch, and along with Azhar's cool innings and Misbah's stubborn innings made sure that Pakistan saves the test match. A draw that is more valuable than a win. I hope he keeps on performing for Pakistan, for a long time. Amen.

ICC: Highly Efficient, Biased or just Inefficient ??

ICC's Anti Corruption and Security Unit will now 'clear' the 30 man preliminary World Cup squad before forwarding it. Sounds okay, nothing bad. But here comes the real thing, it would only be for Pakistan. Sane minds fail to comprehend this. Even if we put the Aamer, Asif and Butt's issue aside, it doesn't make sense at all, if it is being done only for Pakistan. Few days back, some sources suggested that Aamer, Asif, Butt along with Kamran Akmal and Danish Kaneria would be kept out at least till World Cup. It makes one wonder why only Pakistan, again ? Few weeks back, Suresh Raina's issue came into limelight. It was also match-fixing related, and concerned a video which showed him meeting a lady which has relations with bookies. Sri-Lankan Cricket Board evidently had the video and forwarded it to BCCI. No any action was taken at all. I have no idea why News of the World and The Sun was credible to ICC... they launched a complete investigation, suspended the players and nothing else so far has been presented further. Even launched an inquiry into the 3rd ODI of Pakistan against England (which was later on cleared). Same goes with Kamran Akmal here. His biggest blemish, The Sydney Test, which was cleared by ICC recently (Why was it investigated again, when just after 2 days of the Test it was cleared by ICC, is another matter). Danish Kaneria was also alleged to have spot-fixed while playing for Essex along with Mervyn Westfield. They were later on cleared by County Police, but reportedly, owning to the instructions by ICC, he was pulled back from the Test Squad of Pakistan playing against South Africa in UAE. It makes one wonder what actually ICC is doing. While acting in desperation in certain cases, it has played mum on other cases. Sadly, PCB is not in a strong position to counter-act against or even raise its voice against the decisions.

Following are brief reviews of films I have watched recently.

Udaan

A great Indian film which really shows how much potential there is in the Bollywood. This is a coming-of-age story of a boy who despite a cruel and abusive father and against all odds, inspires to achieve his dream of becoming a writer. This film also highlights importance of your good memories and your good friends who are there when things just look against you. This film was directed by newcomer Vikramaditya Motwane. A Must watch film. It is also a slap on those Bollywood directors who rely on copying foreign films and adding some 'spices' to cater the audience.

The Crazies (2010)

The remake of a 1973 classic film of the same name, this film is undoubtedly a gem. It is, as far I have perceived, a much better film than the original. I chose it as a Halloween film (Though, I finished it two days later, didn't get enough time to finish it in one sitting, sadly). This film revolves around a virus that suddenly spreads in an American town of Ogden Marsh. Soon staggering facts are revealed which further makes the story a very gripping one. It has its moments, the really scary moments which are rarely observed in horror films these days.

Independence Day

I was excited to watch this one. Firstly it starred good actors, specially Will Smith. Secondly, it revolved around Aliens, one of my favorite topics. The film revolves around an Alien attack on Earth, which becomes a catastrophe killing thousands of humans. I will not reveal further though, you have to watch it. The film has a great message as well, specially the situations we're facing now. It also taps the idea 'What will happen if Aliens attack us?' and leaves a big question mark.

I was definitely mesmerized by this movie. The film had everything, breathtaking visuals, gripping and thrilling story, underlying themes, great music and add top-notch direction and splendid cast. Nolan is a great director, he's been giving masterpieces every time he creates something. His sense of 'filming' is different, he tends to get inside the mind of a viewer, and simply manipulates it to his will. DiCaprio's acting skills are just amazing as always, Marion Cotillard, Tom Hardy, Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page gave really remarkable performances as well. Caine's role had a lesser screen time, but was a defining one. I might be sounding a bit biased, but what I say is truth. This is simply one of the greatest films I have ever 'witnessed'. Kudos.

The mystery looms over Zulqarnain Haider's 'escape'. He left Dubai, and reached Heathrow, London, saying that he was threatened by a person to lose the match, and if he doesn't , he'd be murdered. His last Facebook status update is quite cryptic as well.
"leaving pakistan cricket because get bad msg fr 1 man fr lose the match in last game"

Let's see how it turns out. But there is definitely something sinister behind it. ICC and ACSU has once again failed to protect the players and monitor the situation.

The Roller-coaster ODI Series

Phew ! What a series this has been ! Perhaps, one of the best that my eyes have witnessed.
Pakistan lost the first match, and what a comeback after that. Fawad Alam and Shahid Afridi's good partnership and Razzaq's super-powered, incredible and flabbergasting innings equaled the series 1-1. The 3rd ODI was almost won by Pakistan, but sadly we lost by 2 runs in the end. Then came the Do-Or-Die stage. Pakistan yet again kept their nerves and pulled the win, equalizing the series for the 2nd time ! 2-2 ! It was all set was a thrilling decider. SA reached a huge score of 317, with sensible, thrilling and not-so-great death bowling by Pakistan, despite quick fall of wickets. Pakistan was given a good opening, but fine bowling from Kallis (yes, that old man again) initiated a mini collapse of middle order. Though, after that Hafeez, Lala and Umar Akmal tied to get the match as close as possible. Then Razzaq and Umar Akmal tried their best but lost their wickets. In the end, Pakistan got all out on 260. It was a good fight. If the middle order had performed better, we could've given a better fight. But I am proud of my team (as always, yes)
Razzaq's stunning innings, Afridi's batting (a lot sensible, yes, I admit he got out on oddest of times), Younis Khan's comeback (148 runs) and Hafeez's good play as an all rounder (making him a must for World Cup) were my favorite things. Let's not forget Akhtar's fiery spells throughout the series, barring the last ODI and Wahab Riaz (*drum rolls* JACKET MAN!) performing well in the absence of Gul. Umar Akmal's innings n the last ODI was pleasing as well.

I do hope that Pak does well in Test Series which starts on 12th of November.

Once Upon a Time, there was Abdul Razzaq...

After the defeat of 1st ODI Vs. South Africa, Pakistan were low on confidence and optimist about the comeback.The middle and lower order collapse restricted Pakistan to a low score which was chased rather easily by South Africa.

The 2nd ODI was going to be a tester for South Africa, as they had to go in without Kallis and Smith. The batting was going to be relatively weaker, and it was a perfect opportunity for Pakistan to restrict Saffers to a chase-able score as they had elected to Bat first. Johan Botha was the acting captain.

The bowling by Pakistan, and fielding as well was fine, but the sheer brilliance by Duminy toward the end took them to 286 runs. Pakistan had a tough score to chase.

There were continuous blows to Pakistan's line-up. Asad Shafiq fell, followed by Younis Khan who was once again victim of a horrible LBW decision. Misbah then came and went early. Hafeez also played well for his 30 but he was dismissed. It was going downwards for Pakistan as they were 70-4.

Then came Boom Boom Afridi, and along with Fawad Alam steadied the innings. But he then got out on 49, ending a good knock. Pakistan still needed some boost to chase this target up. And then came the Razzler, the Razzmatazz, the destroyer... Abdul Razzaq. Along with Fawad Alam the innings moved forward, building a partnership. Razzaq's odd boundaries were keeping the run rate in check, but it was still very difficult, but then started the onslaught, the brutal massacre of the bowlers.

Fawad Alam got out 48. After that batsmen came and went. Zulqarnain and Riaz were brilliantly run out, silencing the crowd. 2 Wickets remained. Saeed Ajmal was then terribly run out, off a no-ball. Only 1 Wicket left...and Shoaib Akhtar was there... hopes were suddenly dented. But Razzaq kept his cool, so did Akhtar, who defended a full toss off Langeveldt's last ball of the over, and I thank him for that, so should everyone!

Then came the nail-in-the-coffin or the-ultimate-destruction.

With 14 required off the last over, Razzaq smacked two sixes and a four to seal a dramatic and amazing win ! Oh man ! And what a win ! Pakistan equalized the series in the most destructive manner possible ! I myself was jumping and screaming as Razzaq got those last runs !

Stage is set for the 3rd ODI, tomorrow, at Dubai. Pakistan are high on confidence, Saffers are low. Let's hope Pakistan pull this one as well !

Start of series Vs. Proteas

Pakistan started their long series versus South Africa on 26th of October with a Twenty20 International. Pakistan lost it, and solely due to poor batting. The lack of positive cricket and absence of proper planning led to a low target of 120. Despite good bowling, and decent fielding, they fell short. It was a charity match with all the money going to Pakistan Flood Relief. South African players showed a great gesture by donating their match fees to the cause.

The 2nd Twenty20 International, South Africa once again chased the target of 121 (Just one run more than the previous one). Good bowling, and fine fielding but yet again 20-30 odd runs short of a good score.

There were many questions asked on the selection. Why was Imran Farhat selected ? He's NOT a T20 batsman and lacks depth as a batsman. Why Misbah ? Though He scored nicely in both the games, but the strike rate was not very good, but if other batsmen had played well, the situation could have been different. New blood should have been tried as well, like Asad Shafiq or Fawad Alam.
And I must say that Lala captained the side well. Even he couldn't do well in the 2nd T20, and bowling was not that good in 1st T20. But he did GREAT.

Commonwealth Games started yesterday in Delhi, followed by loads of controversies and gaffes. Even if that wasn't enough, Dr. M. A Shah did something, that looked downright stupid. Have a look...

As the ticker showed the name of weightlifter Shuja-ud-din Malik and even the name was announced in the Stadium, a rather uncanny figure was seen bearing the flag. And those familiar knew who he was, Dr. M. A Shah the Sports Minister and currently the head figure of the Pakistani contingent for the games. But where was the original flag bearer... ? Well, he was definitely snatched off his rights and pushed back, and reportedly threatened ...
This makes one wonder, why did he do that ? Was he so desperate to gain fame that he missed the saner part of the whole equation... that made him a joke, so to speak, on the screen.

Now decide it for yourself the attitude of umpires, lame decisions and at times, truly biased ones.
We should also look on the matters from a different point of view, and let's take some cases into the perspective, while we expand the issues from different angles.
1. Sulieman Benn and Dale Steyn (While Dale Steyn went the farthest and spit on Benn during the whole episode during the test match, Benn was 'punished' by Referee)

2. Stuart Broad and James Anderson tampering the ball during a test match against South Africa. While conclusive evidence came out, no action was taken. Referee was Chris Broad (Yes, Broad Snr.)

3. Mohammad Aamer and Ricky Ponting

While Aamer was trying to get away, Ponting 'elbowed' him and said a few words. And guess what, Referee instructed 'Aamer' to be careful...seriously... ? Is Referee blind ? (Guess what, he was Chris Broad...yet again)

4. Billy Doctrove

I need not say anything...

This issue and many others pinpoint the issue of weak establishment, bias and inefficiency within the ICC.

The End of a Bizarre Tour

So, yesterday, finally, Pakistan's tour of England ended. Not in the way Pakistan was hoping for, but it ended anyways.

What started with a Twenty20 clean-sweep against Aussies (2-0) was ecstatic, Pakistan performed top-notch grabbing Aussies and thrashing them to defeat. Everyone had expectations from Pakistan now, though it was definitely clear that this team is a young one, and Tests are completely different. So, Test series kicked off in Home of Cricket, Lord's. It was supposed to be a Home series of Pakistan. The 1st test resulted in Pakistan's defeat. But few days later, 2nd Test started at Headingley, and oh boy... Australia all out on 88, and first day wasn't even finished. Pakistan had a great chance then on, and so, eventually Pakistan grabbed this win, after 15 years, against Aussies. History was created.

The 'Home' series ended, now Pakistan's series with England began with a 4 Match Test series. The first 2 Tests resulted in England's victory, but it was the 3rd Test that History was witnessed as Pakistan defeated England after 9 years on their Home turf. Everything looked awesome suddenly for Pakistan, and the 4th test looked like an excellent opportunity for Pakistan to equal the series.

But that was not supposed to be, in fact, it was start of a nightmare for Pakistan, for off-the-field issues. Pakistan was accused of Spot-Fixing, 4 Players, Mohammad Aamer, Mohammad Asif, Salman Butt and Kamran Akmal namely (Kamran was cleared by Scotland Yard, so it became atrio then onwards) by British tabloid (more famously, part of Gutter press) News of the World, after the 3rd day. Evidence looked damning, and soon resulted in controversy. Soon, fallacies in the evidence started revealing, and conspiracy theories started emerging. 4th Day was all about gloom and grimness. Soon the test ended, England winning the series as well 3-1. Pakistan were now down. Their morale was damaged big time, and it looked as if the remaining 7 matches of the series were going to be cancelled. The series was not cancelled, and on the other hand supposedly ICC started investigating (on the claims of a TABLOID) and Scotland Yard as well.

Afridi was back now, and so were Pakistan's hopes of redemption. Pakistan's squad had changes, 2 players were called as well into the squad, the 1st Twenty20 showed how much damaged Pakistan Team was, and 2nd Twenty20 resulted even in grimmer contest, with Pakistan getting bundled out for their lowest score ever. England won 2-0.
Many had hopes about the ODI series, The 1st ODI turned out as a good contest, but Pakistan fell short. 2nd ODI was closely fought one, but Pakistan fell short yet again.

People were disheartened, and it was evident from the crowd in the grounds. But as always, fighting like Cornered Tigers, Pakistan Team thrashed England in the 3rd ODI. Though, this time, ICC yet again suspected Pakistan of some fishy Batting pattern, all because, the Father of NOTW, The Sun, reported it. So much for the Anti-Corruption effectiveness of ICC, as their main source was evidently Tabloids.

But Pakistan kept their heads up, (Though, before the 4th ODI, Trott and Wahab had a spat, with Trott being the main party). Pakistan followed with another win over England, yet again demolishing English line-up ruthlessly. Everyone now knew the strength of Pakistan.

And so, the 5th ODI, at Rose Bowl, was poised to be an interesting contest. Though, Pakistan kept England to a relatively decent score, everyone knew it was going to be a hard task for Cornered Tigers to chase this under lights, and on the track which is supporting Spin and Swing. And so, it did happen and Pakistan lost the match, and the series 2-3.

And the Media blabbering didn't stop there, Daily Mail, reported, the very next morning that Akhtar had tampered the ball, and guess what, they showed doctored images to focus the incident, which were quickly debunked. It is now evident how much biased the Media was acting.

The Tour was clouded with controversies, with Pakistan under attack. And it's end resulted in a collective sigh from every Pakistani who supports the team.

In my next blog I'll cover some important points regarding the double standards of ICC, Match officials and so forth.

In the end. I will specially show my support for Afridi, who glued the team together and kept his head high throughout, slamming the critics.

Pakistan start their ODI series against England tomorrow in Durham. Amidst all the chaos regarding Spot Fixing allegations, Pakistan is under immense pressure, the last Two Twenty20s clearly showed that. Pakistan needs to gain up momentum under the leadership of Afridi.

M. Irfan the Giant Left-Arm Fast Bowler is likely to make debut, it will be interesting to see how he deals with the situation.

Few days back in Sialkot, Pakistan, 2 young lads were killed on the streets with lots of people watching it happen. None of them did anything. Policemen, Rescue people were all there, doing anything but help. Those 2 lads screamed, shouted, cried, but to the people around they were inaudible. How blind are we, how deaf are we. It shocks me to my core that when such a thing is happening where is the morality of the people. People cannot even see an animal being butchered and yet there are those who can witness the killing of their own 'kind'.

I request the authorities to come forward and make the spectators and people involved be brought to justice. Just think of the sorrow and tragedy their parents, family and friends are going through. THEY do not have any RIGHT to KILL humans like that.

I also request the Youth of Pakistan to come forth and do something. IF you remain silent now, you'll remain silent afterwards.

The Reign of the Tigers

If you're reading this, I know you already are a happy man/ woman today, If you are Pakistani fan, then you must be ecstatic.

Yes, we defeated England after almost 9 Years at their Home, and exactly after 4 years after The Oval Fiasco. Out Bowling has been major strength in shattering other Teams. We have made Aussies collapse (127 and 88) and now it was England's turn (Wahab Riaz took 5 Wickets on debut, while Asif took 3 and one apiece for Ajmal and Aamer). The first innings made England completely demolished until a very good inning from Matt Prior helped by Tailenders. And when Pakistan came to bat, all were nervous, us fans knew that if we have to win we have to bat well. And guess what, we did. We crossed 300 mark for the first time this summer. Azhar Ali made classy and at times unorthodox 92*, and he was equally supported by M. Yousuf (making a comeback) who added 56 runs. The openers did a good job as well, with Yasir Hameed making a classy impact and Umar Akmal, Wahab Riaz and Butt adding their scores to the tally.

And after that, England started with 75 deficit on their hands, we took early wickets but England fought hard (brilliant and at times lucky effort by Cook), until, a collapse that the Demolition Team of Ajmal and Aamer initiated. While Ajmal dazzled English batsmen (4 Wickets) with his turning and magical deliveries, Aamer picked 5 wickets (Youngest bowler to take 5 wickets in England) by confusing and at times shocking batsmen.

And so England got all out on 222 with Pakistan needing 148 to win. It was a confident start by Farhat, but Yasir Hameed fell early. Salman Butt played a gem of an innings but got out on 48. M. Yousuf and Azhar contributed well while Farhat got out after attacking Bowlers.

It was all down to Aamer and Umar Akmal to guide the team, it was a patient effort from both and eventually we won.

This has squeezed the Critics hard who were labeling Team Pakistan as nothing. Showed Collingwood why Pakistan's bowling attack is not overrated.

I hope we square the series at Lord's. Let's be positive :)

Pakistan might have lost the second Test, but there were many things that could be termed as 'spectacular' and 'promising' for Pakistan's point of view.

Awesome bowling performance once again by Pakistan, England were made to work hard for their runs.

So much time has passed since I last updated my blog, and so many things have happened. Pakistan wins against Australia in a Test match after 15 years, series with England begins, The Air Blue Plane crashes near Islamabad, flood swipes out thousands of areas...

One wonders, Time can give a wound and heal it as well. As the Green month starts, we think of all these events and contemplate...think that we can do to ease our pains, remove our troubles...

My condolences with the victims of Plane crash, and I hope that God give courage to their families and friends...Ameen.

Order and Disorder

So, the Test has ended between Australia and Pakistan. Even though Pakistan couldn't perform well, with bat that is, but there were many positives from this Test. Like we saw what talents Azhar Ali and Umar Amin here, who have got temperament to play at this level. We saw what Asif can do with his Golden Arm, we saw Umar Gul demolishing batsmen with pinpoint deliveries, we witnessed Salman Butt's eloquent flow of shots and controlled aggression. We saw youngster Mohammad Aamer doing wonders with ball, which became so frustrating for Ricky Ponting, that he had to elbow the 18 year old...

And what happened when this match ended ... ?

Yes...

Afridi announced retirement from Test Cricket, saying that Headingly Test would be last one. He said that his side strain injury is not making him 100% fit, which is a requirement in Tests and also he said that he no more has the temperament to play Test Cricket.

Many people will bash him for this, saying "He's one of the biggest quitters", "Blame him for everything, go to hell Boom Boom" or even "Select me instead, who knows Afridi as a player after all" and all that blah blah.

Now, listen to me carefully. Shahid Afridi is one of the most honest persons ever, he never hides a thing, he speaks his heart out, painful at times for people, but that's his attitude. At least he came forward and accepted the weakness of his, rather than covering it with layers of self assurance and sugar coated lies. He said what he felt, he knew that leading Pakistan when he himself isn't fit, is not a good idea.

We might say that such decision, in the middle of a series will not help in building morale, but this is a reality that we must accept.

July 21 will be the beginning of the 2nd Test Vs. Aus and also the beginning of the end of Afridi's career.

Mark my words, his swan song will be filled with exuberance and class, he's Afridi after all folks, Boom Boom All The Way !

The End of Germany + Spain Wins

Germans finally were outclasses after their run in WorldCup by Spain. The game was top notch with no team doing mistakes. It sheer brilliance of Puyol who did it for Spain. 1-0 it became and then Spain kept the things under lid and hence they won.

It should be noted that both teams were intercepting each other's moves well. While Spain took charge during the first half, Germans looked better in 2nd half, but even then possession was mostly with Spain who never allowed Germans to make their move. The defense was good as well by Spain.

It was an all round effort, Butt, Akmal Brothers (That is more like a demolition duo :P ) , Afridi played well while Aamer lit the game up with a 21 runs cameo filled with 2 Sixes and a 4!

When bowling Aamer once again drew first blood and eventually got 3 wickets! Afridi got 2 and Akthar, Gul and Ajmal took wicket apiece. :)

Also There was moment when Aamer collided accidentally with Clarke, which followed with a very good moment full of sportsmanship.

What will follow now would be Two Tests against Aussies...! Hope we do well there as well :)

Yes...you guessed it right...Argentina's dream of 3rd title was shattered by Brilliant Germans. 4-0 was the misery that Argentina suffered, and that too by class. Germany played well while nothing went right after the 3rd minute Goal of Mueller.

In the second match Spain (whom I am with now) edged past Paraguay. And what a match it was. Awesome and thrilling down to the last minutes. It was because of David Villa (yet again) that Spain won 1-0.

Hey folks...

So, it has been some week of WC. Yesterday, I can feel that many hearts broke when Brazil got out of WC, followed by amazing Ghana. Ghana should have been in Top 4. Agreed. But they were edged out by a cheat. Their goal stopped by the hands of Suarez, inside the Goal. And what else? Gyan missed the penalty. The game continued with Penalty shootout which made Uruguay win 4-2.

It's indeed Sad. And I feel the sorrow of Ghana, along with all of the Africa.

But today, the clash of Titans would occur, the attitudes, egos will collide... in Germany Vs. Argentina. I am with Argentina and hope they go through!

Also in the 2nd match Spain would face Paraguay!

They have all been beaten by considerably weaker teams and major upsets came into birth due to that.

My own team England faces Algeria, and I hope that England doesn't make the list on the top...

On the other side of the world, Asia Cup kicks off with SriLanka defeating Pakistan by a close margin, Afridi's blistering 100 which couldn't make us win. India and SriLanka defeating Bangladesh, both earning bonus points as well.

As I write this down, Cyclone Phet approaches Karachi, and is about 100 kms away now. Hyderabad is getting heavy rainfall due to climate change, and not only Hyderabad, cities like Thatta, Mirpur Khas and interior Sindh is getting that as well.

Okay, here we go, the rain has started again...

This week has been a eventful one in terms of my writing. I finished two stories. One is "The Tides of Darkness" while the other is "Life Is Beautiful..."

Both stories differ on drastic levels. While one dictates adventure with hope, the other reflects life with hope.

Also, I have got another story under consideration by "Strange Horizons". Hope all goes well :)

Love This Album! What an album This Is! Or should i say, THIS IS US!

1. "Straight Through My Heart" 5/5 (Peppy, Catchy, Superb!)

2. "Bigger" 5/5 (Smooth and slow, great tune)

3. "Bye Bye Love" 5/5 (Another Hottie, upbeat tune)

4. "All of Your Life (You Need Love)" (4/5 Really Nice one as well)

5. "If I Knew Then" (4/5 R&B Tune, lush music, A.J's voice so great in this one....!)

6. "This Is Us" (5/5 The perfect song in terms of defining the album, great harmony of voices, as always!)

7. "PDA" (4/5 The funky-tuned song , typical disco beats and catchy rhymes)

8. "Masquerade" (5/5 Another great song....disco tune, along with typical BSB rockin'!)

9. "She's a Dream" (5/5 Another one of those BSB beauties, that sound different and are still are lyrically and musically peppy!)

10. "Shattered" (5/5 My most favorite song from the album, remind you of old BSB along with the tunes of this modern era, The modern derivation of Show Me The Meaning....

11. "Undone" (5/5 You get typical 'George Michael' feel when you listen to this and the music is so good that it crawls and grows on you, you can feel the song on yourself when you listen to it. Nick sounds so matured in this one and you can feel it. Not just he, A.J, Brian and Howie all sound great as always.....)

12. “International Luv” (4/5 A very up-to-the-beat song, with some seriously cool music!)
